CHP releases lane sharing guidelines
«

As you know, lane sharing is allowed--kinda--in CA. Until now, there haven't really been any guidelines about whether it's legal/illegal or now to lane share. After a TON of work from the CA motorcycle community over the last couple of years (shout out to the folks at bayarearidersforum.com), the CHP has finally released guidelines for lane sharing. It is part of an awareness campaign to make both cars
and
motorcycles figure out how to deal with lane sharing and how to do it as safely as possible.
Ignore the incorrect headline on the article, and the fact that they're calling it lane splitting (we lost that fight pretty early on)
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Motorcycle-lane-splitting-rules-unveiled-4270272.php
The guidelines:

I know there guidelines were posted up earlier (they were released a bit ago), but the press just picked it up.

Cool!
Now lets see if other states would allow it.

Wow! A government policy that's reasonable. Cool.

my opinion, really just business as usual. there's still no CVC that defines lane sharing, so it's up to the CHP's discretion on what vehicle code section you've violated that deserves a citation.
I do appreciate the tips to other drivers, however.

Its not a policy, code, or law though. Just some suggestions.

I split in Vegas everyday. I've passed many police and they haven't batted an eye, especially in gridlock. I think there is an understanding somewhat on the safety issue. Or perhaps the luck of the Irish is on my side.
