Overpants

Thinking about getting a pair of overpants as I'm commuting more on the moto and would like to increase protection.  Have looked at Dainese Tomsk's as an option and the A-star Drystar.  Given you guys know what the weather's like here, I need something breathable that I can wear over slacks/jeans/khaki's but offers me a good deal of protection.

I've had a pair of Aerostich Darien pants for about 15 years.  The quality, durability, and ergonomics are all excellent.  Removable armor included.  Very easy to get on and off over your street clothes, and even your full-height riding boots (i.e., both legs unzip all the way to the hip).  I tend to wear it over either long underwear + jeans, or long underwear + Gerber heated pant liner, and either config is comfortable without feeling baggy.

I had a relatively low-speed (25 mph) low-side a couple of years ago, and the pants were virtually unscathed (no repair required, and I'm still using them).

In my experience, you can't get a true rain-proof experience unless you get a one-piece suit (and the Aerostich Roadcrafter is an awesome, if pricey, one-piece option), but the combination I have (Roadcrafter jacket with Darien pants) has proven to keep me dry in modestly wet conditions (I try not to ride in serious rain).  I've also used my Roadcrafter and Darien combo in cold weather off-road riding conditions, and it worked well there as well (although it's slightly too restrictive for aggressive off-road riding).

With the weather around here, you might have to get a couple - depending on how bit a weather span you want to hit.

Now, I have not tried, but some folks have suggested that one can over size regular pants, to act as over pants. That gives you a much wider selection. Hitting up a moto store and doing some test fits would be required of course. Rev'it makes some meshy pants that also have a water proofing liner.

Real water proof pants have some features, that are great for water resistance- like a gatored fly - but also make them not so breathable.

I can't say enough good things about Aerostich as a +1 to what Dave said...worth the $$$ you will spend...and it will never be something that only serves you for a year or 3 as some gear ends up doing....hell...I saw a guy skiiing in a Roadcrafter...

Thanks for the input all.  Have been watching overpant videos on Revzilla to get a basic sense of what is decent, good and great but i have no experience with these.  There have been a lot of great things said about Aerostich Darien so I've got then on my short list.  Time to find a couple of spots to try things on.  Wish we had a decent moto shop with an array of apparel

About $160 when I bought them, great for the cold, probably terrible in the summer heat. Water resistant outer, water proof inner and an extra thermal layer to keep my butt-cheeks from freezing.  Gone down in them twice on the road and several times off-road: very good protection & padding. They've been probably superseded by a new model, but it's the kind of pants I would recommend.

I have a pair of Tour Master Tracker Air Pants for summer rides. They're mesh so they flow a lot of air (like being in your underwear) but they have knee pad inserts and a windproof liner. Note: not waterproof, windproof; actually let's call it 'breeze-resistant', as in they'll hold in a fart but not much else... Never gone down in them, but the "feel" better than kevlar cobweb reinforced jeans and they're on par with cordura pants.

A slight off-topic for reinforced motorcycle jeans: unless you're speeds are comparable to skateboarding UP-hill, just don't bother. When I flipped Bianca this summer, I got road road rash (through the jeans) and a cut where mine tore (Joe Rocket Denim).

I just got Joe Rocket Phoenix pants.  I've worn them once--last Tuesday--over thermals and jeans.  They seem fine.  I got them to wear over shorts in the summer so when I get where ever I'm going and its hot I'm not stuck in jeans.   I'll have to seen how that works out.

how far or long and at what speed did you do said ride...I have found some solutions do not reveal how good or bad they are until tested for longer than 30 mins worth of riding in varying conditions...

Not much longer than 30 minutes and in one weather condition--sunny and cold.  All I can give is my first impressions--that's all I got.  Plus, they're the only bike pants I've ever worn.

Both.  I live near Annapolis and work in DC, and if anyone wants to try them out, they can. When it gets warmer (lots warmer) out, I'm hoping to meet up with some CAMers for a ride--try them then.

That is a great idea I went up to their old shop last summer just for the hell of it, scary area, but no trouble, they are also great to deal with over the internet and I've been doing so for 3-4 years now. If you decide to go up tak US50 over Bay Brideg then US301 North much nicer than I-95. On the way back shoot up to US30 and ride that south/west to Rt. 324 by Lancaster take that south to River Road then to Rt. 372, then RT. 74 and then there are a whole bunch of roads to follow over to Hampstead area, then down tio Liberty Reservoir I could go on and on but you get the idea, makes for a good up and back day. - Gene
