I think I am going to make my bike shop put a 14t on my m696. I just do not like the way the stock feels anymore. What is a good brand to buy and do you guys recommend doing it?? Thanks

Tons of threads on the matter. Use the search here or in tech. Not really necessary for a shop to do it. Very easy to swap it out with basic tools.
Many companies too. I tried JT. Did the job. I think the difference in manufacturers is that some offer lighter weight ones? But I really am not certain.

I've got JT front and rear . . . I've got no need for lightweight sprockets, I don't do track or race . . .

Only thing I will add is this:  Fitting 14t to my 696 was the best value "mod" I ever did.

Agreed! Stebel Nautilus is up there also  waytogo

Fitted 48 tooth (48t) rear sprocket when chain/sprockets needed replacing. Can't believe I waited 20K km to do this, feels like a different bike now. Smooth at low speeds and feels like its always in the power band.  Not missing the drop in top speed at all, in fact rolling on the power to pass in 6th gear is doable now (from cruising at posted freeway speed). No noticeable increase  in fuel consumption either but figured the higher revs the engine must be drinking more petrol.

I did not noticed anything special with 14t. Even worse gears are too short.  150km\h is M696 14T speed limit. First gear  hits rev limiter at miserable 60kmh (35m\h) bang head

Do you hit the rev limiter in 6th?  I doubt it!  You will probably have a higher top speed with the 14 tooth and you will have better acceleration.

I find the 13 tooth is best on my 696 when hitting the rev limiter in 7th gear. I'm drunk. Better head over to the Officiel Im drunk thread.

Meanwhile, here on Planet Reality highway speeds in excess of 150km/h will get your bike impounded and licence cancelled instantly.

Tow truck for the bike - at your expense.  Taxi ride home for you.

Most of us are prepared to sacrifice a little top end in exchange for sharper acceleration.  Until I geared down my M1100 I could barely use 6th gear without raising the interest of  Police.

ok some real world experience on top speeds and around town with 14t vs 15t

14t is a great city change and even normal (under 80mph) highway riding
you LOSE @ 10mph on the top speed. gas consumption goes up (you're running 500rpm higher at the same speeds for the most part - more rpm means more fuel)

15t is a great option for better gas mileage, and less agressive acceleration. AND higher top speed.
i regularly ride above 100mph so the 15t is better.

and yes, i do it legally here in Germany... well for the next few weeks til i move back to Oklahoma, which is when I'll switch to the 14t

and 150kph is not top speed for 14t Wink

it is not about low top speed.
I mean accelerating to 80mph looks ridicules. Your engine roars like crazy like you are about to hit ultrasound barrier, you change gear every second etc and all you get is 80mph at 3rd under rev limiter. Little bit annoying.

true, that is the benefit and detriment of the 14t
you get to the high rpm at a lower speed over coming the flat spots in the lower rpm tq curve,
but it is higher rpm, meaning louder/busier sounding

in around town riding you again are about 500rpm higher at the same given speed, which puts you a bit more in the powerband and above the flat spot.

but under NORMAL riding conditions and even agressive acceleration the 14t is a good choice.
