I have heard that they are an expensive item to replace but that there is a cheaper (non slipper) clutch from some other model Ducati which will fit right in, but sorry I don't know the details.

Betty,
Can you confirm the story that I have heard that the 800 slipper clutch is an expensive item to replace? I heard the basket is a special unit and not standard like other Ducati wet clutches...
I love my S2R 1000!!
800 APTC clutch is slightly more expensive to get plates for.
Yes, you can swap a clutch from the other 800 engines (800ss, m800) for cheaper plates and if you do not like the APTC type slipper.

still cheaper to pick up a new bike... have to bore out the engine, deal with the shorter stroke, buy pistons, flycut the heads.

I'm disappointed.
If bang for your buck is all that matters, sell your monster and buy a gsxr.
Swapping the motor for a 750 or 900 sounds like a lovely idea to me.

i disagree
its not about bang for buck buying a gixxer
its about bang for buck in what he is trying to do
fact is its cheaper and less effort to sell what he has and buy a 900 monster than try and make one out of the 400

I reckon a CR500 would be pretty cool. Lotsa fun engineering a set of adapter pates.....But in the long run you'd save on front tyres.
Or turbo the 400, that's be neat. IMHO best bang for buck is riding the wheels off it. Small bikes are fun to ride fast.
In all seriousness if you can fit the larger barrels it well be a lot less hassle for rego & insurance than putting in a larger motor.
And I'd hate to think what you'll be charged for a long motor locally. I tried to source a late model DR-650 engine complete and the going price was $2500. Anything that says Ducati automatically doubles the price.
As long as no one notices the barrels you'll be cool.
First thing to do tho would be to do a quick measure at the engine mount points and the swingarm width.
