It was lack of reflector and led indicators (Rizoma track 77).

Lack of reflector is fair enough (and a stuff-up on my part), but the indicator bit surprised me, as I specifically bought indicators that had all the DOT markings.

Fixing the reflector was easy as, but putting bulb indicators back on was actually a bit of work, as my loom supplies constant current to the indicators, and bulbs don't like that.

Suz
did they fail them because they were LED or because they now are not the regulation width apart ?
From mammary (bobbies) 300mm over here maybe if its the latter the issue will be easier to remedy .

He said they were too small. They are far enough apart - I checked the ADRs when I built the bracket. There's no mention of size in the ADRs. I suspect he was talking out his arse, but what can I do?

from memory of what yours looks like I would have failed you on exhaust, tail chop and reflector.

indicators are a wacky one.  there's no size requirement as you say, and I had the discussion with a vicroads person one day when doing a rwc about the size, etc, and he said there wasn't a spec, and it was up to me sort of thing.  maybe the inspector stood back 20 metres with them on and compared to another bike and thought no.  I have found led ones lacking in that comparison.

even the spacing thing falls down when you look at the rear of a paso or bmw r1100 or 1150rt (the one with them really close together).

We're all doomed!  laughingdp

I thought the indicator spacing was only brought in because of WA ... to accommodate their 25 digit plates for bikes  Roll Eyes

dig out the relevant adrs and prove him wrong so he has to pass it

i had an issue with a tester years ago with gf car and ended up taking the car to the rta pits when they actually existed
and rta said yes you are right Cheesy

as think of it this way , if you change it and change it back you might next time have to argue with police and pay for it

i dont care if you have been a mechanic for 10 years doing something for a long time does not make you good at it, take my gf for an example shes been walking for 28 years and still manages to fall over all the time.

Surely you can go over his head.  If there is no rule there in black and white then surely he can't fail it, otherwise they could just start making up any old shit they want to fail you.

It was easy enough swapping out indicators and adding a reflector, so I saw no point in arguing. In reality the police can always defect you. The rules around that are that they "believe" the bike isn't compliant. So especially once I have a new exhaust, regardless how quiet, any copper having a bad day or needing to make a quota or otherwise wanting to punish an uppity bike rider can slap a sticker on for the flimsiest of reasons, and it'll cost me $63 to have it removed.

FWIW the Rizoma indicators are extremely bright. They use 1W LEDs, and are brighter than stock. Just smaller. And my tail chop doesn't comply with the 45 degree rule, so by rights they should have done me for that.
