I hope this isn't already posted, but I didn't see it anywhere... My buddy sent me this today and I couldn't believe my eyes!!!
http://www.motociclismo.it/gallery/moto-scooter/ducati-monster-2014-raffreddata-a-liquido-nuove-foto/0%20COPERTINA%20%20LUGLIO%202013%20def?i=
As a Monster owner and fan, I'm not sure whether to be intrigued or pissed about this. I just had a debate with a guy about this topic about a week ago. I sided that the Monster line is defined by the ultra torquey, air cooled, 2 valve engines. But Ducati doesn't seem to stand by any of its famed technology anymore... belt driven cams, dry clutches, air cooled motors. I mean the new Hyper at 821cc puts out more power than the old air cooled Hyper 1100 could have ever imagined. Sign of the times I guess...

Love the return the a trellis sub frame.
Why would you want to add all that weight to the bike? YOUR bike was designed from a blank sheet of paper and uses manufacturing technology which didn't exist 10 - 15 years ago. All previous bikes were "parts bin" and compromises because that's what they could afford. Your bike handles better.
BTW, the front is covered by the road test "wrap". The same technique is used by all the car manufacturers in Europe too. It's designed to break up the shapes and throw off the paparazzi.

The first few years of Monster were "parts bin". Not every year.
Why the trellis? Same answer for: Why the round headlight?

I always liked the look of the full trellis frame. simple cosmetics. ( : For pure weight I love the carbon sub frame they make for my 2013.. 2k is hard to spend though

Suppose you're right about all the guessing in the peanut gallery. Was in a position in the car biz for 40 years to see the pilot build 1 - 2 years prior to production and drive mules on the private tracks. Usually the reality is a letdown.
BUT..., the fanboys are not the people who buy the product thankfully. The wrap only becomes necessary when you need to drive the beasts 2,000,000 miles to see what breaks and change vendors as needed.

True. Mostly in European high-line only August is a slow month. Outside of CA and FL, bike dealers need to sell quads and snowmobiles to stay viable.

Call me dumb, or whatever, I don't really care. After having owned a M900, a 999 and an 848. After having ridden all sorts of Monsters, Hypermotards and 1098/1198's I honestly dont' know why the 1098 SF never gained great ground. If I had to do it all over again that would be the One! The one I've got time on was the best of all worlds if you ask me. Maybe too much for some folks is all I can say against it. But Hot Damn! What a machine! More power than the S4Rs and better handling too. Maybe this new one with the "softer" engine is the one that will strike a chord with more folks.

Bigger version
here
of the Motociclismo pic on p1 of this thread.
More clues there to what sort of frame lies under that wrap.
It's an interesting concept. I too don't see what people disliked about the Streetfighter, but then I've never ridden one and over here they were rather expensive - roughly 30 per cent more for the "s" model than for an S4Rs.
I will speculate it has been developed as an alternative/rival to the KTM 1290 Super Duke:
Muffled and leaned down for emissions regs, likely a Monster 1200 won't make much more power stock than a piped, chipped and dynoed S4R*. It will do quite a bit more in the midrange tho.
Looks like they think the reason the Streetfighter wasn't snapped up was the styling. Falling back on an old formula. Suggests flagging confidence ...
