Does the needle do a full startup sequence? If so, I'd say the needle is fine and the problem is with your rear wheel sensor.

My '03 620 had the same issue last season. I ended up buying a used '02 sensor online thinking they were the same ('03 wasn't sold by anyone at the time). It didn't fit, so I still have it. Finally bought the actual one I need and that fixed my speedo issue.

If you end up finding out that the sensor is the problem, let me know if you want the sensor!

Hi there guys im new to the forum, I think I have the same problem as Fergus... my needle doesnt move at all but also that side of the gage doesnt light up either. Odly enough though the Odometer still works fine, but the left "button" doesnt work  :-\ Im thinking the needle may have just broke popped off like Fergus's... My biggest problem though is how do i get the dash apart? Do i just pry at it? Havent seen any detailed instructions on how to do this. Im fairly mechanically inclined, and do all my own maintenance on my cars but this is my first bike and I dont want to just pry it apart and lose the tach in the process lol. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have searched lots of forums and havent seen this exact combo of problems. Right now im using a bicycle speedometer that only works to about 55 before it gets wonky
