So how hard is this build ?

If I were to build a track bike, this is pretty much what I would want.
http://www.cmraracing.com/showthread.php?28643-Ducati-Lightweight-848-1000DS-Hybrid-FS
So the question is, how hard is this build, without spending $15K
Is it pretty easy to put a DS motor into an 848?

Super easy. A DS1000 from a sport 1000 will bolt right in.

You need a 1000DS with the sbk width at the rear pivot, I believe the sport1k is monster/ss width (wider than sbk) Multistrada DS would be better.

I've actually talked with Jesse in the past about this and he specifically told me a sport 1000 motor... I can ask him again though.

Really, bolting the motor into the frame is only a small part of the build.
There is no exhaust system that's going to bolt in, a good bit of fabricating work there.
The 848 wiring harness/ignition/ECU won't work with the DS motor, best if you got the harness that matches the motor.
Then you've got to use the DS instruments, or fit something aftermarket.
Etc.

I'm fairly certain that a sport1k will not fit due to the width at the swingarm pivot, Jesse himself used a MTS 1000DS. The 900SS motor in my 748 frame in the garage had to be machined down to SBK width, it's doable but it's obviously easier to start with a motor that fits.

He's talking about your monster, not an sbk.

Nope I was talking to him about doing a build similar and what frame/ motor combo worked the easiest.
His original engine was from a sport 1000 and if I remember correctly he had some issues with the engine and Jeff replaced it with a multi motor.
His exhaust was also custom done gp style and had tiny little conical M4 cans on the end.

Not sure what you're getting at with that? It's pretty easy to tell the difference between a desmodue air cooled engine and a testastretta liquid cooled.

The width at the swingarm pivot, vastly different, not a bolt on.

I didn't build it, only just relaying what I was told by the owner.

omg.
ok.
narrow pivot:
SBK (916 on)
MTS
HYM
Diavel
Wide pivot:
everything else
so if you want a SBK frame with a 2v
you need a MTS or HYM motor or cut down anything else
and that's only the cases
so you could get a mts 1000 case and put say an 1100 evo in it (i'm sure minor differences that can be worked)
in the case of Ducati North America they build an 848 frame with 848 cases (deep sump) with Monster 1100 barrels and heads
there was a lot of custom work on it.
also, the frame of the bikes with 4v or 3v motors are different as their throttle bodies are separate and so they have frame bracing in the way of 2v throttle bodies
of course you also have exhaust issues.
any of this is surmountable, but you better know what you are doing or have deep pockets for a good tech
