"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the air—these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Actually I love the express lane on the Beltway when I'm on one of the bikes, get on off of I-66, drops me past the Springfield exchange, free, and it's safer than being on the regular lanes since I'm pretty much by myself and speed limit is posted at 65, use it going home as well it's great - for free. Before I moved out of Reston it was also a sweet alternative in the evening going home since the beltway backs up sometime all the way back to Braddock Rd, people trying to back into Maryland, I could use the Express lanes and get to the Dulles Toll Road pretty quickly. - Gene

They've gotten about 20% of the traffic they expected.  That's the problem.  Yes, they are great for some folks but the actual utility is very low.  People are cruising along in no traffic and see no reason to pay to get into the HOT lane -- and then hit traffic later.

And the big kicker?  The biggest bottleneck is right when the HOT lane ends, which is still inside VA.

That bottleneck you are talking about must be northbound ? FWIW I did a PGR mission Sunday down to NC border to escort a fallen warrior up for a funeral at ANC on Monday. Left my house at 5:30AM and was in a parking lot called I-95 almost from the time I got on it at Occoquan to Exit 4, return trip took us from 10:30AM until 4:20PM with a 45 min break for lunch, terriblle, ridiculous as a country we should be emabarassed as Tax Payers we should be mad enough to demand it get fixed - now. - Gene

I'm referring to the HOT lane on 495 going into Maryland from VA.  It's brutal.
