Proper prep for blasting?
«
on:

Hey all, been a while since I've been around. I've got a motor torn apart that I'm getting ready for a professional blasting job to clean it up before painting, and wanted to know if standard painting tape was the best material to be covering everything up with or if I would want to use something a bit more rugged since I'm going to be getting it blasted first. Any advice on the best way to do this would be appreciated.

Regular masking tape won't hold up.
2 layers of duct tape will. Get it off as soon as possible to avoid a gummy mess.

Back in the old days we used lead tape for blasting, butt I doubt if you can even get that stuff anymore.

I have used gaffers tape for a lot of blasting, doesn't goo up and protects well, use a couple layers. There are bad gaffer tape companies but the best is Permacel. Get the black and then you can use it for a thousand other projects. It is a bit pricey but once you get a roll you will find it is worth it for a bunch of stuff.

Bead or soda?
I never cover with soda blasting, just blow and rinse it off.
