Since someone mentioned Cajun, I'm going through BBQ into the mix. Not sure if Venice is a possible stop, but you mentioned Santa Monica which is close enough:
Baby Blue BBQ. Forget the fact that it is 2000-3000 miles from Memphis, Texas, NC, etc---it is some good BBQ.

I moved here from Austin. Craving some good BBQ. I'll give it a try. Possibly this weekend. I have to go up to El Segundo Sat.

I hear Jay bee's bbq in Gardena is good... I think it was on DDD- Guy Fiere show not long ago

tulsa rib in orange is good bbq
went to baja cantina in marina del rey a couple months ago and it was pretty good.
went to Don the Beachcomber back in the summer for a friend's birthday and i thought it was pretty good
