Crowdsourcing: Help with Engine Number vs. Model Year and Size Table
«
on:
February 21, 2014, 07:40:39 PM »
I'm trying to come up with a table to determine engine size and model year from just the engine number.
I've searched online, and not found any help.
So if you can, check the first four digits of your engine number, and report it here along with year and engine size.
Most helpful if you're the original owner, as pre-owned bikes can have had undisclosed engine swaps....
But still report it if you're not, as engine swaps aren't real common.
For example, the first 4 digits RC3X mean it's a '99 M750.
TIA!

Where's the number stamped at?
On the left side of the crankcase, below the alternator cover.
It'll be something like RC3X014529.
First 4 digits are all that's relevant to model and year.
Last 6 digits are sequential to identify a particular engine, and not useful.
Service manuals have info that's helpful if it's a non-USA model, but insufficient detail for USA models.

Eeeeexcellent, thank you both.
Thorn14, the '5' of the LAA5 denotes a 2005 engine, from what I've found.

Was confused why my numbers seemed different to others, and I was researching, and I'm seeing that the country the bike is imported to matters, as the numbers are different for US vs other countries. The ZDM standing for only appears on my US frame, my engine begins at model of bike (monster). I figure I may as well share this info from two sources.

One I found which I hadn't seen before... showing the differences between numbers.

The first link in google which I assume you've seen Speeddog.

nick is asking for usa style engine numbers, which are different to the euro ones.
zdmxxxx does not apply to the usa.
