I had stored my bike with fuel for about two years with a near full tank of gas. The fuel pump was dead when I attempted to start the bike up, today as I was changing the pump this is what I found in the tank after draining it.

The fuel looked slightly dark and had a very stale smell to it. The accumulation was the consistency of sand and washed out easily. The fuel hose that was submerged from the pump to filter was very soft and separating internally, the hose at the top of the tank post filter looked very dry rotted

If it wasn't from ethanol, what could it be and how do I best prevent it from happening again?

The fuel had broken down, i would bet it looked kind of green moldy.

If you leave fuel in a tank too long it gets a kind of mold/algae it will stick a fuel pump and rot the fuel lines. Been this way forever, it does seem to happen faster with ethanol. race gas and AVgas are better but i simply stabilize the fuel and then swap it out after 1 year.

Make sure to use submersible lines in the tank and clean things out well. What is in your external fuel lines may be okay but I would flush them so you do not run it into an injector.

Good info, thanks!
