when in doubt, pin it

« on: June 06, 2014, 09:09:45 AM »

So I found this really pretty 05 s2r1k at the local cycle shop - they didn't have much info on it other than milage (19500) so I'm working on figuring out what's been done with it, and I'd love it if someone from the area were actually familiar with the thing.

otherwise - if anyone can point out any obvious mods I may have missed

to me it looks like some fairly extensive suspension work has been done, although they told me the suspension's all stock.

the exhaust to me looks like a full kit, but I couldn't come up with a brand.  the bike started right up and looked fine, but they wouldn't let me test ride it.

obviously there's a tail chop, speedymoto top clam/clip ons/etc.
the tank, according to them, is original, but it looks in pretty good order to me.

I'm somewhat concerned about the milage - mostly whether or not I'm going to immediately need to do belts/valves on it, although that's also coming up on my current bike.  If i could get into this thing and put ~2k into my pocket on the trade for my 1100evo I'd probably do it.

lastly, am I going to be sorely disappointed the first time I get on it coming from the 1100?  I can't imagine it's significantly less powerful, but ya never know what the butt dyno's gonna say.

Those are SBK forks from the last years of the Desmoquattros, IIRC '00-'02.
The best OEM forks that would bolt on with minimum drama.

Can't tell if anything's been done on the rear.

thanks for the reply!  I was pretty confident they weren't stock...

I'm really tempted, especially at their price, but I don't want to open a can of worms...

that's an S2R800.  Wet clutch and single spark are the give aways.

I also do not believe the tail has been chopped.  The fender has been tidied, but it looks to me like the frame is still all there.

and this is why we post things here ladies and gents.  I've been looking at these things for years and still wouldn't have known this didn't have a dry clutch, or that the 800 had a wet to a 1000's dry - that makes all the difference in the world.

and yeah the tail's all there, the plate's just been cleaned up - that was one of the first things I looked at.

The Sport Classic line did have the big engine with the wet clutch for a year or two, but it was still dual spark as far as I know.

Well there's that,too.  laughingdp

It's got radial masters, and the calipers and rotors are upgraded from S2R800 spec.

I'd be surprised if that was the original tank, but no big deal.

It's a nicely upgraded S2R800.
But it's not going to go like an 1100.

Yeah, it's a shop that specializes in used bikes/trades/etc - not a dealer. they do have a ducati tech there, but I only got to speak with him briefly.

It is a really nice looking bike, better looking than mine I'd say, and I let the looks get me all excited.  happens every time with pretty women and pretty machines  laughingdp

It's quite a nice S2R800, most folks would be really happy with it.

Throw a good shock on it (if it's not got one already) and ride it!

Looks really nice!  Nice upgrades.  Shock stock? No service records?  Assume it needs belts, fluid changes and a valve check.  Also realize the forks may need to be sprung and set up for you.   If you don't buy it let me know.

yeah the tech said he would take a look at the belts if I was interested - it looks like the bike's been well cared for though, it's obviously super clean.  I was actually hoping someone on here would know the old owner, id have figured someone who put as much into the thing as this has got, they might be on here...  it's really pretty too, but unless they offered me more than is probably rational for them to, I dont see how I can swap my evo for it.  they gave me a quote, and obviously they'd need to be able to make money on my ride for it to be worth it to them - now, if i could find a quick buyer for my bike and put 3k+ in my pocket, it might be worth considering.

"well cared for and super clean" could also mean low milage and subsequently, no/out of date service done.

nice bike, though!

You wanna trade down? Need the money or dont like the look of your Evo and like the older style?
It's a nice looking S2R, but your Evo is the last of the air cooled big bore Ducatis.
