waterproof boots
«
on:
March 06, 2015, 08:57:12 AM »
Happy spring (almost). Been thinking about waterproof boots (gortex ?) but read in several reviews that the water can
potentially get trapped between the outer boot and the gortex lining. So-------looked at some gortex socks by Klim.
They are cheaper than boots and I can still use them with current boots. Anybody here have opinions and/or experience
with this?
TIA

I can't answer your questions specifically, BUT, if you go waterproof make sure it is Goretex. There are some alternative materials available (Hippora (sp?))...but in my experience they don't work as well as Goretex. Not even close.
I'll be getting a new pair of street boots in the somewhat near future, and waterproof is a must given that I'm in Seattle. Daytona boots are the best made IMO, for any style. These will likely be my next pair:

Maybe these though:

I have SIDI Vertigo Rain boots with a membrane other than Goretex - they are waterproof, but since the membrane is close to my feet (not waterproof outer) the
feeling
is that my feet are soaked and cold. With a soaked outer Lorica boot, it's taking forever to dry again.
My first boots were Alpinestars Ridge. They are almost (my impression was 'completely') waterproof outer and that feels very different and better in the rain.

Sounds like gortex socks may be the way to go.
Cheaper and can be carried around with my rain siut

Did you read the reviews on those? Boot condoms...
Anyway, are you wearing a rain suit? I occasionally ride in the rain (I ride just about every day) and my leathers tuck unto my boots. So, regardless of the waterproofness of the boots, tucked leathers are still going to direct the water in there.

no, I didn't.
One step up, to about $20, will probably be better. The difference between socks and covers are obviously that the covers can keep feet
and
boots dry.

Good point about the boot rubbers !! What do they feel like
On the pedals ?? Slippery or squish around ? I've worn over
boots during work and they feel "funny"

I don't know... probably a little "funny", but maybe that's ok if you're dry and warm.

If you really want a pair, call Helimot in San Jose, CA (they're the only US distributor). They're awesome in general, but also very good about returning items to get the correct size. Helmut is pretty good at getting it right over the phone as well.
