I commend you for admitting it was over your head at some point and getting help. I did a '69 Camaro and kept telling myself I could do it. I was wrong. cost more to fix what I screwed up than it would have to have it done right up front.

Back to the Falcon.

So the trunk lid had separated-the outer skin was no longer held in place by the inner bit. So none of it....lined up with the rest of the body. I welded a bunch of tabs that bridged the gap:



and had a buddy hold one side where it should be and tacked the other end of the tab so it would line up with the body, and we worked our way over.

In other news I'll never forgive my wife for wanting exterior door handles. Every other bit of trim and what not has been removed. Except for those.

It's the worst thing she's ever done, and she tossed my Ducati on the pavement.

Hey look-a collapsible intermediate shaft. Now we can go from totally unsafe to less totally unsafe.



A tilt column and a smaller steering wheel means we both fit better.

Stu will object to the wheel change, but c'est la vie.

I need to cut off the old steering shaft next and I like to sleep on these things.

That and the shaft needs to get cut on the engine side of the firewall.

Which I can sorts of get my pneumatic cutting tool to reach, but I have to thread it way down and when I get it in the right spot....the button ends up on the passenger side of the firewall. 

So...I'll be waiting for help on that one.

Then I need to weld on the lower joint and figure out the height of the drops/install the column mounts and then I'm good to go.

The whole mess is too long but that intermediate shaft can be trimmed.

So anyway. Old shaft is ~33" and change.

New column, intermediate shaft, u-joints....is....42".

My math may have been off.

I can cut enough out of the intermediate shaft to make the existing stuff work, but that lessens the amount of collapsibility we're left with-I'd like to avoid that.

New column is 16", and they make a 12", so....one has been ordered.

I couldn't access the steering shaft to cut it so...pulled the pitman arm and the bolts that hold the box on.

It doesn't come out-not through the firewall, can't be dropped out or raised up through the engine compartment. Cut the shaft off and removed the valve cover and I could get it out the top and cut the shaft to the right length.

Next will be mockup when the new column comes, so I can orient the wheel to be centered when the wheels are.
