I took my bike (2011 796) in to have the exhaust modified.  I didn't like the way the Leo Vince cans sat so low beneathe the seat, and how far out to the side they sat.  I decided to have the exhaust valve removed so that that the pipes could be brought up and in, tight to the seat.  Looks great, and he did an amazing job with the bending and welding.  The only issue now is that I'm shooting flames out the back when I rev it.  I haven't ridden it yet due to temperature and sand/gravel on the roads but I'm curious to hear if you guys think the bike will run ok, or if I should be concerned.  Right now I don't have the db killers in the cans but will put them back in because the bike is significantly louder after the face lift.

Should I be concerned about the bike?  Pics are below.  Before and after, pipe routing and the only photo I could get of the flame.

Thanks.

I will assume you had your ECU reflashed to at least DP specs and exhaust valve emulator or deleted from ECU . . .  Usually flames are unburnt fuel . . . do you still have your O2 sensors? Performance air filter? . . .

Not only the 'piping' lenght might have some effect on how the engine is breathing  . . .

Maybe if you tell us what mods you have on the bike it would help us help you

Looks much nicer!  waytogo

Flames usually indicated unburnt fuel due to running lean. Probably a good idea to keep tabs on your temp until resolved. Do you have the DP tune in it?

Sorry, LinL. You type faster than I do.  Smiley

Thanks for the replys.  So far, I have installed the Duc ee exhaust valve eliminator module, and that's it.  Other than cosmetic stuff, the bike is stock.  The O2 sensors weren't removed as the pipes weren't modified that far forward.

I'm not sure what you mean by DP specs/tune, but I'll do some reading.  Thanks again. ....Steve

Ducati Performance, as in DP ECU, intake and exhaust.  Funny how that lean/fire out the back works.  Also check for leaks in your exhaust.

I don't think there are any exhaust leaks, but I'll confirm that tonight.  I'd rather not get in to all the fancy tuning stuff and replacing of the ECU if neccesary.  Maybe it'll smooth out when I install the db killers, but I just don't want to damage the bike by riding it this way, if it's harmful.  This weekend should be nice enough to take it for a spin.

if it is lean, in extremes you could melt a piston . . . I would recommend a Rexxer rwflash with O2 sensor elimination . . .

what it does on the overrun is kind of irrelevant.  if it has std ecu still then it'll benefit from reflashing and being run open loop in general.  if you don't want to do that then don't and live with how it is.

did it blow flames before?  i can't see that what you have done will make much difference.  ok, i looked again.  so there now isn't a collector?  given it's a 2v it might be ok with that.

i ran a 1098 with ti mufflers (cats inside) on the dyno once and it had a blue flame out of the exhaust consistantly on overrun.  looked very cool.  the cats were so red hot they were translucent almost when you looked in the muffler outlets.

No collector.  Each pipe runs right to the can, individually.  Standard ECU, totally stock.  When you reflash the ECU, do they put in a new map or just open it up so that it builds it's own based on the bike, mods and how it's ridden?  I don't need more power or performance.  It's a toy and a commuter and I don't race or abuse it.  I just like to ride it to work and back and occasionally ride it 600KM to our vacation home, among other trips I take it on.

It didn't blow flames before, although it did sputter and pop on decel when I took the db killers out.  My main concern is that I'm not doing any damage so whatever will prolong the life of the bike is what I would like to do, short of going back to stock.

Who's the guy you'd suggest to have the ECU reflashed?  I really don't know much about this, so go slow with me.  Grin

So I guess my final question is, what is the best method for making sure the bike runs well after the exhasut change?  I don't need more power, torque, speed or infinite adjustability.  I would like to enjoy riding it on the highway and as a commuter and not shorten the life of the engine.  Budget is an issue, and I'm not interested in constantly adjusting, playing and messing with it.  Something easy and effective.  Suggestions?

I've been searching and can't make sense of all the options.  Power Commanders, DP ECU, Bazzaz, etc.  I have no idea what I need, or what makes the most sense for my situation.  Advice appreciated.  Thanks. ...Steve

Dyno run with an exhaust gas analyzer.   Are you running a DP computer or stock?  Stock air box?

Stock everything except the exhaust, although I just plugged in the Duc ee because I thought I needed that to prevent the exhaust valve CEL.

howie . .  he is running stock ECU

SteveO, I dont know where you are located, but, do as howie says, CO should be around 4% avf both cylinders . .   . A reflash after tbe dyno run or with the dyno run data can help the programmer write a map specifically for you; even better it would be to use one of our sponsors to do both . . . You'll find them on the left under Sponsors . . .

Something similar happened to a customer loccally and he had the ECU reflash with a DP map and bike got better by about 75% . . . I did some extra work, mostly maintenance and got to about 95% better . . . Ocassional popping but that's it . . .

I'm in Calgary AB, Canada and I'm not sure if there's anyone around that can do this, but I'll ask around.  I'm more in to the dirt side of things and modding a street bike is new to me.  I also spend a lot of time in North Idaho, and my bike comes with me so that's an option as well.  My main concern is taking it somewhere to a mechanic I don't know or trust, and having them throw money at it and hope for the best.  I was hoping for more of a plug and play solution (if possible?  maybe it isn't) but I definitely wanted some expert advice.  I've read a bunch of threads on a couple of message boards and don't feel like I know any more than when I started.  Huh?
