Not that this isn't cool, but I'm pretty sure there are several apps that perform this function using the phone's accelerometers already. They can also be programmed to notify anyone in your contacts list.

Do you have links?  I can't find anything in the Google cloud except for a couple of apps developed by ambulance chasers that don't do automatic reporting.

http://app.eatsleepride.com/ (saw it here first: http://www.asphaltandrubber.com/products/motorcycle-mobile-apps/)

So it looks like that's the only one I see for the US. There's another one for the UK call RealRiderApp that does something similar.

Ah.  Looks like it comes with other interesting features, too.

That one won't work for me until I join the collective... Cheesy

I'm inclined to believe that the eatsleepride app will have difficulty with the plethora of accelerometer solutions on the android side... my phone doesn't always respond appropriately to movement when re-orienting the screen...

I don't have any personal experience with it, just remembered reading about it. I'm considering it lately, as I am riding quite a bit. I see this one contacts three people, I don't know if one of them can be 911 or not...

I think there will also be options for re-using the data generated by the puck... but time will tell.

In Europe we have this http://www.realrider.com/ It auto calls the emergency services and gives your location if your in an accident. It also plots your routes but does not record any speed info for those people who may want to use it against you in an accident (Da Poolice!).  Nominal annual fee. waytogo

Problem is (for me at least), because it relies on cell phone coverage I'd be SOL on a good part of most of my rides...

This is an issue where I am.  Here in the mountains, there just isn't good cell coverage on the good routes.  The majority if Deals gap is void of cell coveage, so in the event of an accident someone has to go racing down to the lake or back to the resort to make a call for help.  Here Spot is a better service to have, but it doesn't report the accident, but it allows you to be located.
