Totally agree with you on that I did some comparison shopping testing on shields, there was an article on Ducati.net with pictures, I have a Fabbri GenX shield, works a little better than the setup on my M900.

Your also right that they are two different bikes, the only reason they compare is the guts of the two are pretty much the same, motor/electronics. I compared them because I had considered the two and the M1200S at the time I purchased my Diavel. I was just trying to share my experience. Now that the M1200R is out it might be time to have a 2nd look at that bike as well, from what I've read they fixed a few issues but they also increased the ride height. - Gene

Well, the thing about the Multi is that it comes with touring luggage so you really don't have to do anything to it to make it a great long distance touring machine and you can still take the bags off and tear up the race track or your local canyons.

I first rode the Multi shortly after I bought my Monster back in 2011 and at the time I thought the Multistrada was perhaps the best bike I had ever ridden (I still think that).  I rode the Streetfighter 848 after that and liked that bike more than my Monster too.  After that I decided to stop riding demo models that I might want to buy so the next time I needed to drop my bike off for service I said give me the Diavel.    Didn't mind returning that bike at all.   

You can take any bike and try to make it something else.  Soft bags and windshields on a naked bike don't make it a great touring bike.  I'd rather buy the right bike to begin with and for me that was the Multistrada and I've owned nothing but naked bikes before this.

The Ducati catalogue will have adventure accessories Im sure. The Multi 1200 really does look like a very adaptable platform.

My idea of a great touring bike is not an MTS, it's a great all around bike(many roads), maybe the best. The Ducati ST series were pretty darn good sport tourers but I would not call them great touring bikes. And FWIW the bags on the MTS are not that great. There are good bag options for many Ducati Models, including the Diavel. The MTS is a very good bike it does have some quirks, issues - it is a Ducati after all - and the newest version has some new issues but they'll get it figured out. Back to the original topic I would not get rid of my M900 for an MTS I might have considered getting rid of my ST3 for an MTS, but it was too tall. Now the newest verison fits but it's too late, the looks are still a little off and I've got a Diavel, but boy would I love to have an ST with the new motor/electronics/suspension of the MTS/M1100R/Diavel. - Gene

I doubt you'll see a sport touring bike from Ducati in the near future.  They just don't seem to be the rage at the moment.  I haven't ridden an ST.  I'm sure they're awesome though.  It's a Ducati after all.  

I'm sure BMW makes a great Goldwing, as does Honda, and BMW makes a great ADV bike.  The Japanese make some compromised sporty touring/ADV bikes and some heavy but comfortable touring bikes.  For on road sport touring though the MTS is pretty darned good.

I really don't understand why you say that, only difference in the rider traingle is you sit in the bike on a Diavel instead of on it like the MTS.

I say that... coz my personal preference is to sit on a motorcycle as per the MTS .... with my weight on the footpegs rather than my arse, YMMV

Compared to what?  I'm sure the Diavel is a very fine and sporty ride indeed.... when compared to most cruiser-style machines.

BTW how many miles do you have on a Diavel? On a MTS?

Zero miles.  What's your point?  A Diavel is not for me.  I accept that others love 'em..... and I don't give a fat rat's arse

first off, i want to say that i know this thread is now fairly pointless, as the OP has already purchased some kind of yamaha (an FJR?) whatever.

secondly, i think the previous gen multistrada actually looks pretty freaking badass! i have the pike's peak and it is one beaslty looking mothrfckr. much better than the new one, imo, which looks like a neutered version. sure it's still a good bike.

third, i want to point out that, for me at least, the diavel is a much better long-haul/touring bike. (ugly as make the beast with two backsing sin, though. probably the most ridiculous looking bike ducati has made since the MH900.) i've put about 2,000 miles on my 2015 carbon red, admittedly with full ohlins suspension that cost a stupid amount of money, but the seating position could not be any better. i am 6'3" and 210lbs with a pretty long inseam.

in my experience, after 4,000 miles on the multi, something about the ergos on that bike makes my knees hurt after a few hundred. i am, however, much faster on the multi than i am on the diavel.

my most recent bike is a panigale r, and for some reason i feel like i'm faster on the multi than i am on that too -- regularly doing 100+ on the ``ADV'' bike without realizing it, while i know it and am starting to get scared when i approach 100 on the superbike on the highway -- obviously the pani will prove to be a different story on the track.
