I like the classic steel tank Monsters and used to have one several bikes back. I am looking to buy another, andI would be interested in any up to 2006, which would fit the style I like. However, I could also get a 2007 S2R, with the same style. All others above 2007 have either the plastic tank or the new headlight and new instrument cluster, which I do not care for.  What are your recommendations for a 2006 or maybe abit earlier model vs. a 2007 S2R? Any specific advantages to either? Thanks.

Most of what you are looking at has a plastic tank.

My 05 s2r had a plastic tank.  Pretty sure the 06 and 07 did too

I believe the entire Monster line-up could have had a plastic tank '05 up...most did. IIRC that year was a swing year for the 620. I don't think the S4R, not S4RT or S4RS, ever had a plastic tank.

My memory might be IZ_.

996 Desmoquatro S4R metal tank.

S4Rt and S4RS plastic.

620, don't know.

695, don't remember

All S2R plastic.

620 > Some '05 metal, most plastic; before, up to '04, most metal and plastic started to be introduced, seen a few '04 with plastic      tanks from factory
695 > ALL plastic
S4R > as stopintime says
S4RS > plastic
S4RsT > same as 620, sadly, one special edition did come with metal tank, as ducpainter sayd, memory a bit IZ_ this AM

i'm shocked that no one built an aftermarket aluminum tank for these later monsters -- especially for the super expensive and tricked out S4rs. i know that would cost a few grand, but i think a lot of people would cough up for it. the panigale's aluminum tank seemed to be a big selling point...

The problem is, I believe, that the S4RS/t has a different pump mounting flange. Due to the relative scarcity of the 4V bikes compared to the 2V the market just isn't there.

Yes I now see the alu tanks on Motowheels are only for the s2r and 620/695.

It's a pity because I want to buy an S4RS with a red frame and put alu fairing/tank/cowl on it with just a clear coat over the top -- something different. But if I can't do that, I'll just look for a tricolore... Not sure about using samurai-whatever and waiting five months for some "beater" in Japan to do me right.

Thanks!

The 05 S4R with the 996 engine (red frame/red tank black stripe & cowl) were the last of the 996's with a metal tank.

Getchaself one.....and paint it whatever color you want. Power delivery is great. KNOCK ON METAL  drink

I believe there is a clearance issue with that tank on the Testastretta motor...that's why the oval pump flange. I could be wrong.

If it would work, you'd need a bracket for the frame.

No...my fault.

I missed that completely... bang head laughingdp

The 996 is not for everyone. They're less refined than the 998 motor. I prefer them because they're a long stroke motor and like the way they make power, but I'd have to say that other than wiring harness issues with the 5am canbus system the S4RS is more reliable than the 996 bikes if only for the lack of rocker arm problems..
