Hi everyone.
I've found that my 2010 monster 696 starter motor is going to die... i've checked evey connection, the battery is new and shows 12.8v at the multimeter, the relay is clicking and 12,4 volts shown at starter positive lug but nothing. I've found that i can start the bike (in particular when she is cold) only by engaging 1st or 2nd gear and giving her a firm hit in reverse whitout clutch engaged, trying to spin the starter...
So, the point is: my starter is a Taigene 4 brushes, non rebuildable... the original one in ducati costs 400euros plus the work to install it on the bike, is a bit expensive...
I've found on ebay an okyami starter or a denso starter, the first one new for 150 euros and the second one for 180, but they say on the site that is compatible with monster 696 08 and 09... they have the same engine? i don't want to buy a starter that doesn't fit on my bike so...
Please HELP!  Smiley
and thanks for the responses

I honestly don't know if the other starters will fit. I can't see Ducati changing the cases, so I suspect they would.

I'd just comment that there were changes in starter gear sizes along the way. Where you're changing brands make sure the starter gear is correct as to diameter and tooth count as it might not swap between brands.

You just need to make sure that the part is a direct cross-reference to  270.4.011.4A

Just because a relay or solenoid clicks doesn't mean it's good. Have you bridged the relay to double check? Worth doing before you spend $$.
Ultimate test is to supply power directly via remote battery to the starter, + to the cable lug and - to the starter case. I know the voltage reading was ok, but worth doing to be doubly sure, again before spending.

Starter motor for 696 appears to be unique to the 696, 659, and 796 models.

27040114A has been superseded by 27040116A.

The Ducati starter motors are generally quite reliable.
I've only seen one that was flat worn out, but likely that was from a sticking solenoid.
I've seen a couple that suffered seal failures, and the engine oil migrated in and ruined the brushes.

As Koko said, power applied directly to the terminal on the starter is the only way to definitively check it.

Many thanks for the responses. I've checked voltage at the positive lug of the starter and it reads 12,3v... Every time i press the button so it can't be the solenoid sticking... The other thing that induced me to think that is the starter: every time i got that damn click, i give a generous hit in reverse and bam, she starts... Also i tried giving some hit with a piece of wood directly to the starter so maybe there is a fault contact in there... I will try the direct method with anoter battery but i think that i need to change the starter... I've seen a video on youtube of a 796 showing same symptoms and the guy said was a bad starter
So the okyami one doesn't fit right?
