If you're a big guy coming off large capacity cruisers, surely big bore torque would be better?

Thanks for the info/opinions.  I'm slowly gathering some data and history on a few of the bikes that look like a good fit to my budget and desires [I'd say NEEDS but, ... well, then again?....]

I've only seen 1 - 900s ie [ no 1000's ]  that was for sale around here so far this season. That one went early in the spring and sold in 3 hours after being posted on CL   It had suffered from a low speed crash and seemed to have had just a few cosmetic issues. It went for $1500   Both me and roommate guy [separate sightings] called and the seller just chuckled. Posted at 9:00, gone by 12:00

If at all possible, I'll go with the larger displacement just because I like knowing the goods are there if needed. I'm about 6 feet - 180 lbs   The guy selling the 620 that I test rode was 3 or 4 inches taller, maybe running 200 lbs.? [ but then again I'm not a carnival guy who can guess the weight of people either:  "Step right up and fool The Guesser!"]  He said he even took it out west for a ride in the Rockies. He said the sliders on it also let him stretch out his legs like highway bars.  Nice to know.

So let me guess....the fuel filter for the S models is located inside the tank?     ....... also, sorry if this sounds dumb, but I'm use to seeing a red line on tachs. I'm not sure I've ever seen one on a Ducati.  What's up with that?   Is it Ducati just sayin'  "come on, we dare ya!" ?  is there an ignition retard feature if a rider hits a RPM limit? [rev limiter?]

A solid 125 to 130 would suite me just fine. I think roommate guy said he never saw more than 110 or so his 620 with just the modified chopped and cored stock exhaust

That would be about 120 on the radar I reckon? My modified 900 made 125 on the dyno without me as a wind sock. Mind you it depends on the gearing, head wind, etc. I'd be happy with 140 out of a modified 1000. I think the Capirex 620 had a turbo. laughingdp

Dunno... that was with my SPA with the tire circumference measured and input into the gauge. I think it was pretty accurate.

For what it's worth Ducati claims 133 stock on a '04 1000.  I came close on mine, (by GPS) but ran out of space.  A little like pulling teeth over 120.  Anyway, more that enough for a naked bike.

Yeah fuel filters are in the efi models tanks.
Worth checking out that 1000. waytogo Service records worth checking too.

Maybe I'm being too cautious Huh?  but, I'm a little hesitant to buy from an owner that's had a bike for a few years yet can't tell me much specific detail about the bike or the mods, what the history is and has no service history for it.  I've been told "hey, if it runs fine and gets down the road just fine, buy it and just do what service to it you can and have all the rest done at the dealer"....or wherever.
I dunno...maybe he's right

Not disclosing...or hasn't a clue? Doesn't sound like he's lying. Undecided

If you're buying a bike with unknown service history it really needs to be heard running.

Yeah, if it's from a state or 2 [or 3] away, I'd need to see/hear some video of it getting a cold start and being driven before making the trip to get it. Some sellers don't want to deal with a buyer like me and won't want to do it. That's ok with me.  There's about 4 or 5 bikes I'm looking at from varying distances away. I'm pretty sure one of them will work out. Somebody will take the time to work with a buyer like me, even from a distance. The sellers are selling the bikes for a reason!  The beautiful thing is, for me, some of the fun in buying this next bike is the looking around and seeing what's all out there and being schooled in Ducati-speak by you guys. Besides, there's ALWAYS another deal to be had. Patience and perseverance pays off.

Last fall when I sold my BMW, the guy that bought it did it unseen. He pulled the trigger based on some great photos my roomie took and posted on CL. Then I took some close ups of the one damaged spot that I was gonna fix and then took some video of me doing a cold start of the bike.   I also think he must have talked to my mechanic guy to confirm the bike was being truthfully advertised.  Mechanic Charlie had been seeing that bike off and on for 22 seasons and knew it well.
The buyer came and picked it up in the spring. Everybody was happy!  The funny thing is, he was only 2.5 hours away. If it would've been me, I would just come by to see it/buy it in the fall.  That's just me....

koko64,  it's near Grand Rapids, MI.    It's posted on CL    I talked to the seller briefly.  I THINK he may have gotten a nice looking red M1000s ie Ducati that was a bit too much for him?.....but who really knows.  He started making noises about his friend being interested in it and weather I was REALLY interested in buying it, better hurry, etc.   

I'll see about posting the link .... but sad to say these computer doo-hickeys and their magical properties are a might mysterious to me    Roll Eyes     I usually end up screwin' something up.
