Practice started Monday. Here's some footage of Alonso getting some laps in. I posted the full schedule of events for the next week as well.

Alonso was having a good day, especially for his first 500, but the car broke.

I'm glad the Japanese fellow won.  The great American race, engines made abroad, Chevrolet most likely made in England.  The two chassis are made in Europe.
There are no Americans racing in Formula One or MotoGP.  I give credit to HAAS for trying F1, but he has to use drivers from Europe.  What is going on in this great country.  The majority of drivers today at Indy are from somewhere other than here.
WHY???

Many reasons. F1 and MotoGP aren't popular in the states. To go to F1 as a driver you have to have been pretty much groomed to end up there and if...if you have the skills, you' have to bring the big sponsor money with you. 8 of the drivers at Indy today were American. I believe the pipeline to MotoGP doesn't really exist here either. Nicky had mad skills and came from flat track racing, but it was a hard road for him in the premier class. imho

Ben Spies was the best rider when he got to MotoGP.  His Yamaha (I think)quit on him several times when he had the race won.
When M. Andretti went to F1 he flew home every weekend.  Not to focused.

Fernando represented himself very well. That Honda made UGLY sounds when it cut loose.

Yes he did. Pretty much everyone in the stands stood and applauded for him after his car broke.

it's about money more than protecting our young. The only racing series that makes money in the US is Nascar and that does not translate to any international racing.

For the same reason, motorcycle racing is worse off. No money there since most people in the US can afford a car. Motorcycle culture here is more geared to being a tough guy with a hog. Even when you look at the sport bikes, you're likely going to see a video of a guy pulling a mile long wheelie instead of a guy in leathers on a track.
