I have rode dirt bikes and four wheelers my whole life. I had a Honda CB550 before this monster.
Now I have a 2000 carb'd 750 monster and I'm curious what RPM range you stay in. My monster hates to be anywhere under 2500 or it's lugging. I know there will be contrast between my old 4 cylinder vs the 2 but I feel like i have to keep it always in the 3500 range to keep it happy with on/ off throttle.

Is that where you keep yours?

It depends...

When I'm slowing down and in other situations with zero throttle = no lugging or other issues even at the lowest revs. If I open it up fully, it needs to be north of 4,000/4,500. Soft gradual roll on is fine from 2,000

These bikes work best at +/- 6,000. Best balance, least vibration, best response, best mileage  waytogo Maybe cruising with a steady 20-30% throttle at 4,500 is also ok...

For just cruising around, 4K is ideal. That range will allow for throttle response when you give it a handful of throttle.

My 900 will run smooth at lower rpms, but you need to down shift to accelerate.

When I first got my Ducati, I was thinking 'V-twin, low-end torque!'  My Monster quickly told me "Hey, blockhead, I'm not a Harley!"  With the OEM exhaust, it had to stay above 4K, with my aftermarket cans I can take it down to 3200 RPM, but 4000 is where it's happy.
