Is there a significant flavor difference between the yellowish tequilas that I'm used to seeing and a white tequila?

Yellow is aged.  Minimum 45 days for "reposado" and min. 1y for "anejo".

For mixed drinks the clear stuff is fine because the benefits of aging are lost in the mix.

Notably, aged tequila is relatively new: from the 60s or 70s in origin.  Was a way to make it seem more refined, but all the very old Mexicans prefer the clear ("blanca") stuff because that's what they grew up with.  Aging does make it smoother but also loses some of the variety and kick in flavor.

I'll have to pick up some unaged and see how that changes things.

Tonight I used up all of the last of the old white rum and opened a new bottle. Not a whole lot of difference.

Tried a recipe that had some bourbon in it. Not my thing but Cindy loved it.

The search continues...

It also seems that most bars make LIITs with well brands.

So that throws everything into question...

My experience from the LIIT days was that most bars were using some type of LIIT mix, which they added some well shots to before mixing the whole thing up.

That was a Looooonng time ago, so I've expended the sum total of my knowledge.

Also, I'd try some Kraken in there and see what it gets you... [evil]

One thing to remember...

when in Mexico if you ask for añejo pronounced anayho, they'll look at you like you're speaking Hebrew.

It's añejo (anyaho)...that little squiggly thing over the n is important.

It's actually a solid idea. I'll try it tomorrow night

Tried it. This was the biggest step towards the flavor I get when I buy a long Island at someplace good.

Next step is get some of that clear tequila and see what happens.

My liver and I are determined to solve this mystery.

Sounds like you needed more sweetener. I would also consider something tart. Lemon juice?

I have sweet and sour mix and have tried that.

Lemon juice and simple syrup seems to be the alternative. I'm skeptical that it would produce a noticeable difference though.

I did try a recipe that used 2 tbsp of lemon juice and much more than a splash of Coke to balance that out. It was drinkable but not the greatest.

But again I think the change in rum made a huge difference.
