Am I naive in hoping justice will actually prevail here?

When is the last time the NYPD was held accountable for this kind of stuff?

Seriously, I can't remember.

Its NYPD. What did you expect? Id say 90% of cops go in with the intent of serving and helping others. By the first year, im sure half of them have given up on people. the other half still need a job.

Seriously though, it seems that the officer's firing was probably justified.

he wasn't fired, he is just behind a desk rather than on the street while they "investigate the matter".  He won't have anything happen to him and will be back on the streets being a dick soon enough.

has the situation between bicyclists and cops gotten that bad? i never had issues with them unless i did something blatantly wrong. (like bombing stairs)

i left before the critical mass thing really got going too. i had to worry more about drivers messing with me than the police, which is part of the reason the whole critical mass thing got legs i believe.

Cops don't like critical mass and it has been an on going issue for years.  They city has tried stopping it by taking the organizers to court and they failed.

are the riders running lights or hitting peds?

as much as i get blasted for saying this (and prob will again) bicycles are considered vehicles, are not allowed on the sidewalks, have all the rights that a car gets, and are subject to all the responsibilities of a car. bicyclits are given lanes to ride in to keep us out of the way of the rest of traffic. the lanes are often times far too small, and blocked by cars. bicyclists get bumped around and treated with disrespect by both peds and cages. it's no wonder they are aggressive and go through red lights and split lanes.

and yes, there are a fair share of them(though i should say us) that take it a bit overboard and are practically militant. some break the laws with impunity and harrass peds, ride on sidewalks, and take up way too much space on the road.

i still say the cyclists are getting a raw deal on all of it. it's sad to see that it's gotten worse since i left.

though the police job is a very noble job "in theory" unfortunately theory and reality usually aren't the same.  THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS UTOPIA.

Thus this saying will ALWAYS apply to military and law enforcement, no matter if your relatives are involved in either.

Sad but true.  That is why there must always be checks and balances even on those that are supposed to be "the good guys protecting us".

Bacon WAS perfect. Then one day the entire internet decided that bacon consumption would replace beer consumption when guys started spouting off about how much ______ they could eat/drink. This new form of internet prick waving has taken bacon from a widely enjoyed food to a simply annoying internet meme that will hopefully soon go the way of Chuck Norris and Numa Numa.

I am not justifying the cops actions but I hope these obnoxious critical mass f*ckers end up dying in the back of ambulances that are held up in traffic by more self righteous pinheads like themselves. 

If you want the laws changed or you want bike lanes constructed or you want more people to ride, fine.  But mass stupidity will do nothing for your cause.

They break the law, they piss people off, and they have no meaningful agenda.
