Pageantry.  The shitloads of Pageantry.
The scale.  If the Olympics are not pure or controversy-free, it is at least huge.  It may be a colossal waste of energy to build stadiums in a new city every four years, but I kinda like the moon shot kind of human ingenuity.  Because it'll be cool, that's why.

Do not want:
Commercials.  Normally there is nothing to like about them, but NBCs lineup of fall shows looks more stupid than usual - there is no amount of advertising that will make me watch The Flimsiest Premise starring Christian Slater.  Also, my local news affiliate is waging some kind of good will offensive - they insist on really,really, really caring about me an my city.  Ignoring for a moment the arrogance of assuming that you "make a difference" by reading reports of car accidents and stabbings from a teleprompter, I very much doubt anyone gives fraction of a shit.  Enough with the leg humping.
