I worked at a pizzeria in NY and I wouldn't touch the nasty things even if a customer wanted them.  I also found that you could grab a couple of slugs from the alley and no one could tell the difference.

Nasty,.....you're not serious?  [puke]

Prol'y more a comment on that particular NY pizzeria than on anchovies... Lived on pizza (that and mac & cheese) through grad school in Manhattan and despite some notable standouts, the average NYC slice is, well, edible once you remove the odd roach & add lots of oregano & red pepper...

Now NYC bagels on the other hand, it seems impossible to replicate outside about a 15 mile radius around the City.

Unfortunately, you are correct that a lot of NYC pizza is awful, then again, there are some great shops.  Pizza is one food I don't find goes well with anchovy.  They take over.  Then again, if it is bad pizza it can be a good thing.

I am pro-anchovy, though I do not enjoy snacking on them whole.  Definitely for to add flavor to other foods, esp. the oft mentioned Caesar and puttanesca.

There's a NEW Haven?

The first time I had anchovies on pizza, I thought they looked like gecko fillets.
Eewww. But then I developed an appreciation for them. Anchovies too.
