front fork seal problem

Hey, so I've had my bike ('94 m600) for a few weeks now, and on sunday I noticed the seals were leaking. I called the previous owner's mechanic yesterday to book it in for the seals to be replaced, and he tells me that the part of the forks that the seals rub against is corroded on my bike, and so just getting the seals replaced is only gonna be a short-term fix. Apparently the forks need to be re-chromed.

Just wondering if anyone here knows roughly how much it's going to cost me. I asked the mechanic and he said he would get back to me because they were busy and he had to check.

Hey Bizza I have a set of forks that you can have they are scratched on the outside but the chrome leg is mint, send me you address I can post them.

  mate that's a really generous offer! I live in townsville, qld. Depending on what the rechrome will cost and if you wanted to send them up, I could deposit some money in your acc to cover the cost + like $100 for your trouble. I would just need to know how much the rechrome is gonna cost first is all.

No need TNT will be about peanuts, buy some bling for your monster instead,I cant stand seeing it like that

PS: I guess we need to know if the will fit first, get me the dia and the length of the fork. for your referance they came from an 02 mod .

ummm, it's the right hand side when sitting on the bike. Not sure on the length and diam, but I just got off the phone from our local ducati dealer and he seems to think that 94 and 02 monster forks would be interchangeable. PM sent, thanks for your help!

so, you ring this mechanic and he tells you the chrome slider is chipped/pitted/corroded or whatever? if he knew about it without seeing it did he do the roadworthy? if so, i'd be getting a little upset as oil leaks are a fail on a roadworthy.

Perhaps when they last replaced the seal (for the roadworthy or whatever) they thought the corrosion wasn't that bad and the seal would hold out longer. I'm not too sure, I'm just focusing on gettin it fixed atm.

As are damaged suspension components??? He obviously had senn it and knew about it??

Apparently the forks need to be re-chromed.

You'll need to work out which forks you've got. Some of them (like the non-adjustable Marzochi's on my '99 M750) aren't able to be rechromed (well, not easily, apparently the fork bottoms are pressed in and they're very difficult to dissassemble and reassemble compared to "normal" forks).

the early ones have 40mm caliper screw spacing, '99 or '00 onwards all of the range had gone to 65mm i think.  the later ones will be 43mm diameter too and have some sort of cartridge inside if they're marzocchi.  all showas have cartridges.

the 600m have 40mm marzocchi that are just crap, and the chrome does wear off and rust as part of use.  we've had RAD in maroochydore (maybe) do a few sets of various things for us, and i think they've done the non do-able marzocchi before for us.  they end up a touch shorter i think, as they have to machine the old retaining rolled edge off and then redo it later.

or get some 40mm caliper spacing forks from something else.  the adjustable marzocchis seems to be better chrome wise, or the showa non adjustables from a 900m/early 750ss or the adjustable showas from a 900ss will go straight in and showa chrome is almost perfect.  i've just put revalved and resprung 41mm non adjustable showas in my 600/750 and they're very nice.  i was thinking of machining up a plug to weld in the bottom of the original 40mm marzocchis tubes on mine and then fitting some cartridges from the showas, etc, but i found a rh showa non adj on ebay to match the new lh leg i had so ran with them.
