Title: A bike built for one....FINISHED WITH PICS!
Post by: MrFryMoto on August 30, 2008, 05:45:24 PM
The lady has been wanting a beach cruiser for a while, and after pricing them out, buying her one wasn't in the budget.

so a little over a month ago i picked up this baby on Craigslist and suprised her with it on our 6mo. anniversary.
really the only thing that is "wrong" with it, is the broken handlebar.... it rides great and the tires hold air!
(ignore the mess)

i told her she can pick out the color of paint but that's it, the rest is up to me  [evil]

well today was the first day of deconstruction...

the big gray bar you see was what i had to use to get the pedals off the crank.   [roll]

hey look, the original color!

next is to finish stripping the several layers of old paint, then prime and paint with the new stuff.

dont be such a woman about it.  ive actually told people that if they buy the paint, a hundred bucks or so, and pay to have it done i will paint my bike any color they choose.  we never decided on how long i would have to leave it that way but the discussion always starts at 6mo-1year.  a real man could ride a pink bike.

The chain through the frame reminds me so much of Ash and his ladder.  :)

Great job! I love the lines on that bike. Instant classic.

Just don't wind up like this guy.

Be gentle with what?  How hard we jerk you off?!  That looks make the beast with two backsing awesome!   [thumbsup]

You're thinking of adding more to the head tube or seat tube?

I'd leave the head tube alone with just the signature, but some on the seat tube would probably look pretty sweet.

you can thank the GF on the color - it was the only input she was allowed to have.
AFAIK she thinks it's going to be a solid green bike with a basket.

thanks for the encouragement

The pictures make it look better than in person though....

i need to clean up the edges around all the lines somehow... still figuring that one out

the acrylic dries hard and isn't forgiving once dry, so i probably won't need a clear-coat

Is that what it is or is that just some sort of glare or reflection or something?

What's with the handles being intertwined so they can't be opened up?

Just looks that way. Look closely, and you'll see that they're separate.

Agreed. The rest of the bike looks great, the last thing you need is a gaudy basket making it look cheesy.

Baskets can be painted, fyi. Perhaps white, with green pinstriping.

I've typed out about a dozen things, all of them very witty and flattering, none of them within the rules of the DMF.

What they all boil down to is: Wow.

Well done, Mr. Fry.  [thumbsup]

That fourth pic down is the money shot.

Also, the more of a surprise it is, the better, but only if you have a friend waiting in the wings with a camera. I like the "nonchalant" idea, but you'll have to have someone capture her reaction while you bask in glory. We all know that without pictures, you don't actually have a girlfriend.  ;) ;D

Red is the wrong color for the bow....

make it yellow...

Dang, that's a nice job there Mr.

Tell her you two will enjoy a picnic instead of the norm. Then as the garage door raises, Bam, so does her response. There it is with bell and bow ready to go. With fruits in the basket, have her break it in while you ride beside her carrying the rest of the meal.

well, me thinks it was a success.
i rode over to her place, put the yellow bow on the seat and casually walked inside.

we talked about her trip, etc etc. then decided to go run some errands. She walked out side and first thought it was her roommate's bike - then realized that this was actually hers.

she seemed to enjoy it - i'm trying to convince her to go on here and write it in her own words but she thinks you guys won't like her.
