They are just going one way tomorrow.
Then they'll turn it around in a few weeks.

The big deal is in a month, when they start throwing shit in both directions to see what happens.
You can get a little more done by then.

Well, not really -- the actual experiments that could result in potentially disastrous "micro black holes" won't happen for another month (and probably won't end anything except the lives of a few protons), but as rumored, CERN's flipping the switch on the four billion dollar Large Hadron Collider this Wednesday to test the superconducting magnets that control the proton beams. After a clockwise test, they'll send protons counter-clockwise, and after that -- smashy time. Of course, there are still paranoid lawsuits pending to shut all this down, and we wouldn't mind another rap video or two, but after two decades of work, it's probably time to boot this thing up, death threats or no. Let's make it a good last month of humanity, people.

So, anyone got any plans?

In an infinite metaverse, all possible universes exist.

I'm packing a bag... gonna dive through the wormhole that leads to the Hooters universe.  ;D

Don't worry, if it happens you won't know. You'll be compressed into a quantum singularity faster than you can say "quark".

one of them is that i never got to finish that burrito. from the other day.

I was wondering about that -- is it instant?
Or do we see it coming -- ala the Simpson episode where Homer turns 3d?

Just wait until they actually do the real test.

Yes. And the resultant collision will release energy 100000 times hotter than the sun. Or so i've read...

It'll cover the 17 mile tunnel 11,000 times in 1 second according to the article.  That's pretty damn fast IMO

no doubt, it's just not the speed of light. from what i understand, they aren't sure what will happen if they send the particles around at light speed so they are holding it back a bit (like 10kph)

I think it's not simply a matter of "holding back"  I think that the issue is 2 part - for an object to travel the speed of light it a.) can't have mass & b.) must be in a vacuum, but it is my understanding that the vacuum part is not necessarily true, it's just that if it isn't a vacuum, then the speed of light is slower (I remember reading something about "variable speed of light theory" on Wikipedia or somewhere)

I think the LHC magnets gets the particles/beam up to 99.99999999999999% of the speed of light...

Well, according to Einstein, it is impossible for something with mass to travel the speed of light. They can go faster, or slower, but not exactly the speed of light. Also, from what I read, the LHC does operate in a vacuum...

Thanks on Einstein, I had forgotten about that!  & re: the vacuum, I figured that they had tried to create as "perfect" a vacuum as possible on earth with current tech, but still nowhere near as good as space **edit** just read up on it, and apparently there was talk that the vacuum was almost "too good" and they were joking about making some cracks, as beam-gas interactions are only possible if the vacuum ISN'T perfect...

very fascinating, but the more I try to learn, the more my head hurts...
