Title: please show me your seat...
Post by: hydra on May 08, 2008, 11:38:51 PM
hello,

i just picked my 1st duc, an S4 Foggy. i'm really digging this bike but of course i'm looking to change a couple of tings...

i've been doing a little research and it seems the DP Gel seat seems to be the most comfy. can someone please post a pic of their's on the bike. i don't think i've noticed anyone having one. looks a bit puffy but i haven't seen it on a bike so it may just be an illusion.

the sargent looks like good quality and looks good. but how's the comfort compared to stock? noticeable and worth the cash?

and how about the corbin's. they look nice but from my experience, they're a bit better than the stock seat i had on one a beemer but it was also a bit hard. comfy but hard at the same time.

please share some photos if you can.

thanks,

russ

I have had the sargent seat on both my monsters and definitely recommend it.

It is fine for 300 mile rides and I love the under-seat beer holder.  Also dig the italian flag decal - stylin'  wt:

It is substantially wider than the stock or DP seats though, so you probably wouldn't take it over those to the track, and I hear the DP seat is plenty comfy as well.

I'd post a pic or two but there doesn't seem to be any way to upload them.... am I missing something?

I just got a DP this week. I wouldn't describe it as puffy. The gel section is raised a tad and there's a slight cushiony section on the backrest(?) but that's all as it should be imo.

You have to use a photo hosting site, then link to your pics.

Now on topic here's a pic of my bike with the DP seat

Cheers

The seat is great.  Doesn't slope as much as the stock one towards the tank (a lot fewer ball bustin stops).  The seat is more comfortable and actually is rather flat not puffy.  the only downside is leaving it out under the sun in summer.  That gel will fry your ass real good if you don't cover it or park in the shade (been there done that.  Once it happens one time and you ride home standing or sitting on the rear cowl you'll never forget again. LOL.

I've got one of these on order but you know how that goes. If there aren't pics up here yet by the time I get mine, I'll post up. I need to take some updated pics of the beast anyway...

I've riden over 8k with mine now.  Aside from turning your ass into bacon if you forget to cover it the seat is the cats meow.  From a styling standpoint it's flat black, but the stitching and more angular profile is pretty nice.  the rear of the seat actually squares up a little which meets the cowling nicely.

I thought the same thing when i was warned prepurchase.

To get an idea take a gel heating pad microwave it for 3 mins then sit on it.

I've had gel in some of my other seats. I only see it being a prob if you are wearing jeans or similar material to ride in. I've never had a problem with full or 2-piece leathers. I guess I'm gonna find out...

You'll notice it (though not near as bad) even with leathers.  At least i did in Dainese leathers.

Seriously though it's not that big a deal.  I wouldn't change mine.

No worries. Worse case, I break out the cleaning towel I carry for my visor and good to go!

awesome cowboy! that looks pretty sporty as well...

did you install the bar end mirrors yourself? i'm trying to install mine right now. i can't seem to get the bar end off from the left side. the right one came off easily. the left wouldn't happen to loosen in the oppossite direction? i don't think it is but hey you never know....
i tried putting a lot of pressure but it hasn't budged.

It's been so long ago (over 18 months) that I honestly don't remember regarding the bar ends.  sorry.

The install is easy move grips up about 1/2".  put brackets around bar.  tighten screws while holding the white ball in place.  Align, tighten, ride and adjust mirrors as necessary for maximum viewing.   Then dr:: a few to celebrate.

Heres a couple pics of my gel seat. I absolutely love it except when it's been exposed to direct sunlight. The gel gets HOTTTT, and it doesn't cool off quickly unless you put something over it.

Plenty of good pics already but for what it's worth another DP Gel shot.

No it's as simple as toggling a check box.  The PITA is the extra storage and server costs the hosting company would charge.

To allow 1100 members and guests to upload pics at will would double or triple the storage reqs and significantly increase the costs running the site.

wanwo, thanks for the pic. the material looks like it takes on dirt easily. is that just how it looks though? is it hard to keep bug stains off? i also looks like it keeps you from sliding but how about when you want to flip from side to side? does it still allow you to move your butt around in the twisties?

It gets a a little dirty sometines with dust ect, but it's easy to clean. As far as grip goes it's not as slick as the stock seat but it won't hinder any butt moving in the twisties, it's the best mod you can buy for any type of long distance riding.

DesmonsterS4RS, thanks for the input! looks like i'm going to go for the gel too.
BTW, i saw your monster in the bikes of the DMF thread....nice job. what kind of forks are those?

I haven't been able to try mine on the bike yet. What impresses me so far is the different cut that is supposed to keep you from sliding forward, and what the photos don't show, the feeling of the gel pad. Soft but somehow firm. It'd probably be hard to go back to a non-gel seat after this.

It is different for sure.  If you're used to sliding around in the seat (e.g. throwing the bike into corners) it can be quite an adjustment as the seat is really "sticky" compared to most.  'Tis uber-comfortable though and going back to a less padded seat I could definitely feel the difference.  But there's no DP Gel Solo Section so I'm back to reg'lar ol' perf'd leather.

i started this thread in May when i first bought the bike and i've finally got me a new seat. i was intending on going with the DP Gel seat. instead i found a used sargent on ebay for $275  [thumbsup]

i've had the seat now for about 2 weeks and i did a couple of +200mi trips on it. compared to stock the sargent is the SH*T! i've been riding with the stock seat since May (~5500mi) so the sargent felt like a drastic improvement in comfort alone. but it's also transformed the riding experience on this bike. the bike feels more solid, as if i tweaked my suspension or something. i guess that's how sh*tty the stock seat is. this is something that didn't happen in such an obvious way when i replaced the stock seats on other bikes i've owned.

the seat raises the height i'd say about 2" or so and is much wider than stock. i wear leather most of the time and the material holds me in place but definitely not sticky. i'd say just a bit more hold than stock.  there is a slight dip that also help from sliding forward but during hard braking i still slide like before. overall, my best upgrade so far...

and i love the way it looks on the bike ;D
