Ok, as I am inching toward to a surprise proposal to my gf and best friend of seven years I am trying to figure out her ring size. What makes it hard is she currently doesn't have any rings in her collection. Plus, I don't want to make it obvious by going to a jewelry store to try some on.
Now onto my question, a coworker says that your shoe size is a close equivalent of your ring size. Are there any truth to this saying? Can anyone here vouch for this as I have never worn any rings before and a noob to jewelry.
It would be great if this is true as I would have a better guess with just her shoe size hehe.
I'm afraid to say the only way to get the perfect fit is to use one of these:

There are other factors to consider...weight gain and lose, time of day you measured her, time of year (hands tend to get smaller in cold weather, but some people pack on the weight in winter).
Tough to surprise her AND have the exact size.
You could hatch some brilliant plan to have a friend of hers go shopping with her to look at jewelry and see if she could determine a size.

I thought ring sizes were in letters?! ??? Maybe that's just in NZ.
I just bought a ring and we had it resized after I gave it to her (not your fiance, mine). I bought an obviously big size. They just cut the ring and close it and work their jeweler magic. When I bought it I negotiated the resizing as part of the deal.
Talk to the jeweler about it. They'll advise you.
Don't tell her friends. A girl's idea of a secret is something you can only tell one person at a time. ;)
Good luck!
congratulations on finding "the one" :)
shoe size has nothing to do with ring size.
i wear a 6.5 shoe and my ring is a 5
can you call her mom? she may know, or have an idea.
If you know a good jeweler, do what BWClark did. If the work is good you will never find the seam. Just don't go so big you may be insulting your lady.

I could not do that with titanium. It was either get it right the first time, or send it back for a new ring :o

+1 [laugh]
Compare your fingers to hers, or find a girl with similar build and hands at the store. Don't get her anything that could go on her big toe! ;D
get her really drunk, til she passes out. Then measure her finger. ;D
Congrats !!
You will definitely want to get as close to her size as possible. Sizing can be done but depending on the setting (channel set side stones for instance) could pose a problem or two. She doesn't have one ring you could "borrow"? Thickness of the ring shank will also play into it..maybe 1/4 size or so.

This was my immediate thought also. [thumbsup]

couldnt have said it any better. or you trick her. You know that joke, "they said you can tell if your gonna have a boy or a girl if they look at your palm" and WHAP in the face.
say, "you know, they said, if you have an even number ring size, your best years are on your even ages." and make her measure it herself and tell you. the drinking part is more fun though. congrats man!

Er...my ring finger is a size fifteen. My shoes are a ten.
+1 on the getting her drunkeled.

You guys are geniuses, how come I didn't think of that? [laugh]
Great suggestion He Man, that's usually the approach I use to get info from her but I doubt my gf knows her own size though (She not big on jewelry). So I can't use that in this case.
I've been searching around the net and someone suggests I measure her ring size with a string while she is asleep. Some guy even dip his fiance's ring finger into a jar of Play-Doh to get a measurement while she is asleep [laugh], too funny.
Maybe I'll combine the two, get her drunk and dip her finger into a jar of Play-Doh;D
Anymore suggestion? Man, I love DMF, will you marry me? jk, just practicing, hehe
unless she's a size 7 you're going to have to get it resized. all new rings come in a size 7. The best way to get close is to take a ring to the jeweler she wears on her ring finger in her right hand. If she's right handed the left one will be about 3/4 to 1 size smaller. The opposite for left handed people.
congrats, and don't let these make the beast with two backsing jewelers rip you off.

I hear they're all thieves.
What size Moto gloves does she wear? How well do they fit?
yeah, i'd try to grab another ring that she wears and take that to the jeweler! :)

oh yeah, every single one of those bastards.
Rings come out of the machine in different sizes? ???
Estimate the size of her finger, go a little big, then have it resized after presentation.
Dude just buy the ring then take her back to get it sized, I just proposed to my girl of 4+ years and it was no big thing. Just make sure when you do ask that the jewlers are open the next day or that day cause she's gonna want to get it sized just as fast as you want to pick up your bike when you special ordered one.

depends where you buy it. 90% of your average jewelry stores send their work to stores like mine, where we have a full shop. your mall and chains stores generally do not have in house goldsmiths.
if worse comes to worse, overnight it to me and i'll size it and ship back the same day. no cost to you.
If you were considering online purchases anyway you might consider browsing motogpfan's stock too. [thumbsup]

if thats the case you are definitely not going to get it sized fast. find a local goldsmith, not just a jewelry store, and ask them if they offer while you wait sizing or at least next day turnaround.
Everything I carry are on these 3 sites. http://www.stuller.com/ https://www.qgold.com/default.aspx http://www.sefindings.com/OurProducts.htm
good luck, if the sales guy is wearing a cheap suit, go somewhere else.
