Title: Big Bend CANCELLED
Post by: muskrat on December 30, 2008, 09:00:56 PM
Until further notice, we must move the trip.  I'm afraid that I have to be in Cinci that week now and it's getting too close to the wedding to plan that far ahead.  Sorry for this guys but if you'd like I can forward all the info I have on Big Bend if you decide to tear off on your own.

OMG you don't know how long I have wanted to do this ride. I have heard it's a pretty quick trip once you get outside of Abilene. I've had friends who have actually gone out there in a matter of 6-7 hours on the bike. These are HD dudes who do something like a race/timed/thingy to see how fast you can go out and come back. I'm thinking an 8-9 hour I-20W blitz then down south to the BBNP. One of my friends who has a Busa said he got his bike up to 180+ down one of the roads on a bright sunny day. When he came to a stop in a small crossing a statie came up and said that was some impressive driving, how fast were you going? Bobby said about 180 or so. Trooper said, I thought so I lost you at about 150. Went on down the road.

Look at me I'm a 970 now!

Dax, any routes in mind so I can fire up the PC atlas and dream?

[moto] I would be interested in doing this ride !  [moto]

Das Boot will not do 150 mph unless you throw it out of a plane ! It will however ford small streams, go over loose rock bigger than pea gravel, and allow enough pillion for camping - but that slows it down even more ( to sensibly above the speed limit ) !   [laugh]

Sounds like a couple of different routes are being discussed ( Abilene vs San Antonio ) so I too will keep an eye on the thread and see what develops !   [thumbsup]

My theory is that being hasty seldom allows for full pleasure - not that there is anything "wrong" with that !

Heavens no I'm not talking about doing 180. So, don't worry. Maybe 140 at best  ;D

Seriously, are you thinking of a week or a long weekend? At best I may be able to do 4 days if I plan far in advance. I'd also like to camp and don't necessarily need to do the hotel/motel scene when out on the road for a flash ride like this. Who's thinking of going?

so far BlueStreak, Slag, Kat, Me and Slur L'Burr
I'm thinking we leave early Wednesday and trailer down to ride Thursday through Saturday depending on how many roads we find.  Camping?  I will check.  You in?

Definately will consider it. Can't say at this cuz don't know when you plan on running it? It will be easier if I can plan in advance with my office.

Here are the costs if we do a group camp site in Big Bend:

1 week motorcycle pass   $10
1 week car pass   $20 (for tow rigs)
Camping in group spots   $3 per person
Individual camp sites   $14

Camping sounds great to me. I am also fine with a hotel or cabins.

Here is a link to the only lodging in the park

Chisos Mountains Lodge (http://foreverlodging.com/lodging.cfm?PropertyKey=73)

We have a friend who is interested in coming, but he is only 33.3% on the trip. He is waiting on warranty parts for his MV, so he may not have a bike. Is that OK with everyone? If not I will tell him to plan his own trip  [evil]

HAHAHAHA  [evil]

We will not truly know who is going until we get there.  People have been known to back out the day of a big trip.  The guest list for HC and the AR trip last year changed continuously.

I really think that splitting cabins is the way to go.  If some people want to camp, that is just fine.  Flexibility is never, ever overrated  [beer] ;D

true...........I'm guessing about 6 bikes so far.  I have room for two more motos on my trailer or we can use your 30 footer and camp inside it if it's cold.  Also, if anyone has portable compressor might not be a bad idea to bring in case of flats.

Title: Re: Big Bend anyone?
Post by: Slag on January 05, 2009, 07:32:14 AM
I have a compressor and generator. My 30 footer is a flatbed, and I do not see this trip requiring it.

Group campsites have a 10 person minimum. We can always tell them we have 10, and just pay the extra $3 per person per night.

That will work great for me. At first I was OK with camping, but a bed will be welcome after a day of riding. I was very upset with the bunk beds at Koyote Ranch in the HC, and it affected my trip.  What can I say. I am a softie when it comes to sleep...

When exactly are y'all going?  I know it's "the end of February," prolly a Thursday thru Saturda/Sunday.  I'd really like to make this trip but Feb 22 - 27 is a no-go for me  :-X

Oh well, there's always The Hill Country  [evil]

I am SOOOO going to make one or the other of these rides this time 'round  [moto]
