Title: What shocks fit S2R1000?
Post by: vaclav on January 06, 2009, 04:29:12 PM
So I have searched around a little, placed a few calls, sent a few PM's, and haven't found the answer(s). I am trying to figure out what shocks will just bolt right in, right out of the box, no problems. Anybody have a brand/model number/price/vendor that fits the bill? I would really like to hear about first-hand experiences. Thanks.

A sachs shock, found on my 07 s4rt will bolt in, no problems.  $110 shipped (in the FS ads, from me)

Other options are a DU333 Ohlins (triple w/remote preload) $875 DK Racing, $1127 retail (everywhere else)
Penske double adjustable $850 (traxxion?)

999 showa will also bolt on, but you'll need to move a few things.

TAfts' S4RT shock fits because of its reservoir. Its almost as if it was made for ducati monsters.

Every other shock that doesnt have an external reservoir, will require the crankcase breather box to be moved at the very least. Then the coil adapter.

I have a 999 Showa waiting to be installed. I also have  a 1098 showa on hand but it wont fit the S2R1000 without jacking up the rear a bit since the swingarm might hit the reservoir.

I wish that wasn't the case.  The TTX for the 1098 is awesome, and you can (or could) get them for $800 with the MSNlive cashback deal on ebay.  It's almost worth the small mod to the swingarm to make it fit.....hmmm....

Do you have a pic of the S4Rt shock in an S2R1k?

No, I don't.

The 999 shock fits both the S4 and S2

The 999 shock is the same length as the S2R shock (monstermash)

The 999 shock is the same length as the S4R shock (Me)

= S4R shock fits the S2R.

So both the 999 & the s4rt shock will bolt up without mods to an S2R1K if the rear is raised ???

Any difference between the two ???

i thought the reservoir hits the coil on both of the choices.  the S4Rt would allow you to leave the breather box though.  i have a 999 showa that i have dry fit and it was fine once i moved the coil and removed the breather box.  i just need to get a new spring on it and am hoping it will be good.

side question, does anyone know the oil weight in the 999 showa?

Yes and No.

The 1098 shock requires the end to be raised quite a bit because the reservoir points backwards and can make contact with the swingarm.

The 999 showa fits, but you'ld need to move some things.  The reservoir will hit the breather box.

The S4Rt shock should fit WITHOUT having to move anything.  It's just adjustable

Thanks [thumbsup]

I was actually asking the performanse differences, if any, between a 1098, 999, & S4RT rear shock.  I've got my rear height adjusted as high as it will go without switching to a longer rod.

Has anyone fitted the S4RT rear shock to an S2R1K ???

I got a response from Traxxion today. They said they talked to Penske and Penske claimed to have had only one issue with fitting their products on a S2R 1000 which they have since resolved. They did not specify what the issue was. Traxxion says they have had no complaints about any shocks they have sold to S2R 1000 owners. Any Penske owners out there want to weigh in? Ohlins? Elka?

Penske shocks will fit, but it might not fit the first time just as it comes out of the box.  I bought mine from TD.  I had some issues installing it, because of the way the hose fitting was installed on the shock.  I called Penske directly, explained the problem, and they told me that it was OK to go ahead and torque the 90* fitting an additional 45* in order to make it fit.  My only concern was that the fitting might break from the torque, and I wanted to make sure they would fix it for free if that happened.  It didn't break when I torqued it, and all has been well.

I nominate Ivan for BoMB.... that's one sweet S2R you have put together.... let's see some pics [thumbsup]

I am trying to figure out why Ivan did not have the linkage interference problem that Speeddog mentions in this thread: http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=16988.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=16988.0). Granted Speeddog is talking about a S4R rather than a S2R 1000. Is the layout of the rear components really any different between the two models?

Read my reply + deductive reasoning = answer.

Ivan's bike has a Penske. In the thread I linked, Speeddog discusses issues he had with Penskes. Since none of your replies have anything to do with Penske's (except mentioning a price in the first one), I don't know WTF you want me to deduce.

AFAIK, the rockers and geometry are the same.

Possibly Ivan's Penske came with the longer top eye, which the Penske that my customer got *didn't* have.

Sorry, I can't add anything regarding why mine fit and the other didn't.  I had no clearance problems with the upper part of the linkage.  I assume that Speeddog is correct in that there are two different lengths for the upper eye.  If you want to buy one, just speak with the folks at Penske to make sure that they understand the issues.  You could always point them to the thread that shows the pictures....

Yeah maybe they corrected the problem before you got yours Ivan. Thanks everybody for the good information. Sounds like there just haven't been that many aftermarket shocks installed on the S2R 1000 yet. I think I will start with getting the right spring on the stock shock. Does anybody have any experience with this? I sent an email to RaceTech to see what they had for my weight (200 lbs).  I have already changed the fork springs. Thanks to Speeddog for the tips on making them fit right.

The RaceTech online spring rate calculator is FUBAR for Monsters, it's just wrong.

At 200 lbs with no gear, you need a spring of about 11.2 kg/mm.

RaceTech has 10.7 and 11.6 springs.
Depending on how you ride, what your roads are like, how you want the bike to feel, etc. will determine which one you would need.

I can set up your shock if you like, feel free to call me or PM.
Or you can have a local suspension guy set it up.

I'm the guy with the M695 fitment problems mentioned above.  Penske is currently reworking my shock per Speeddog's info.  I sent them the pics and they understand the issues.  They recognized the longer top eyelet as the "1098" eyelet.  It was hard to tell from Ivan's pics if his shock had this slightly longer top eyelet.  Mine was the first M695 shock they had built.  I'll update my original thread after things get sorted out.  The lead guy to talk to at Penske is Mike Himmelsbach (also a very accomplished longtime racer).  I would not hesitate to go the Penske route.  I also have their triple clicker on my 749s and it's a very nice shock.

Thought I'd restart this thread because I just picked up an '06 749s shock for the S2R1000. Where is the best place to go for a new spring. I'm 185-190lbs. no track days and not many curves in the mid-west. I would think the 749s Showa is the regular 999 Showa?

IIRC, i bought my eibach from some company that specializes in off road dune buggy parts, but i do not remember where.  much cheaper than an MC site.

if you dont have the tools to swap the spring. then your best bet is to just go to a shop and have them order it for you, then let the mswap it out.

the 749s model is the same as the base 999 showa. the regular 749 is a sachs unit.

did you do your front end yet? you will notice a better ride in the rear, but you wont notice a huge improvement until you do your forks too.

My buddy has a shop so spring removal is covered. I thought about springing front and rear at the same time though I'm still a bit confused about spring rates front and back...
Anything has to be better than that non-adjustable sachs I have now. Where is a good place to get springs?

what kind of shock spring do you want? Traxxion dynamics, ebachs, ohlins....just go to your dealership and bring that showa spring. they usually have a few springs on hand.

I don't have a dealership I do business with and there isn't a dealer close to me. No one I would let touch my bike nor any component from my bike.

I am surprised no one mentioned the Ohlins DU321.

http://www.ohlins.com/Our-products/Motorcycle/Products/Sport/DU-321/ (http://www.ohlins.com/Our-products/Motorcycle/Products/Sport/DU-321/)

I have one and find it a great upgrade over stock.
