Title: insurance???
Post by: Clickjack on January 21, 2009, 12:04:17 AM
I'm sure this has been asked but I'm looking for a new insurance company.   I have been with progressive for several years but I've been a little displeased lately.  They are charginge too much and didn't come through last time I needed them.  I live in Texas need full
Coverage for my bike, gear, and parts.   And I want a company that will pay.  I've heard horror stories about companies being cheap but then being reluctant to pay and dragging it out.    Any suggestions?    Any experiences with foremost?

Geico in California, $650 full coverage, had my lic for less than year at the time.  Allstate wanted $1500 and I have car and homeowners insurance with them...

what you are describing is something you'll experience with almost every insurance provider unfortunately...I see it with cars in my line of work...no one is exempt...they will cut corners at the customers expense to save themselves a dollar if they can....the good thing with Progressive is the fact that they do in fact give you a decent renewal discount as you keep with them long term(as in it keeps going down as long as you are claim and problem free)...for 3 bikes with full upgraded amounts of insurance, I paid $660 for the year I think.

progressive for my bike, geico for my car.
you can't beat progressives coverage levels, especially the $3000 in accessories coverage.
they have shafted me in the past on a car accident... they will do everything they can to not give you money. that's the way all insurance companies work. with full coverage, it shouldnt make any difference how the accident/damage happens. they HAVE to give you money, that's what full coverage means. You just have to be ready for your rates to go up.

I have foremost. I think it's just under $200 a year. I have not made a claim so I can't vouch for how they handle them. Can't complain about the rate tho  [thumbsup]

Geico has some great rates for my vehicles, they insure everything but my house.  I only have liability on my motorcycles, but it's $37/six months.

I actually was an independent insurance agent for Foremost and Progressive.  Foremost is a company that takes higher risk clients, so usually their rates are a tad high and claims coverage isn't all that great.  I currently have Acuity insurance and that's $420/yr with 100/300 limits and $250 comp/collision deductibles.  Progressive was at $550/yr no layup period.  As other members stated before, it's the insurance claims adjustors job to try to keep payouts to a minimum.  You're going to see that with all compaines.  Good luck!

I have state farm they are the only ones who wouldn't charge me 3k$ or more to insure my 1098.  And they cover track days.

I have Dairyland and after my accident they were fantastic  [thumbsup] Literally had a check in my hands for the replacement of my gear (helmet, jacket and gloves) within 48hrs, and the bike was paid off as soon as the adjuster totalled it.  No muss, no fuss. Just as it should be.

Progressive was great for the majority of the last 5 years.   But my last two claims they didn't give me enough to fix the damage.  And then wouldn't return my phone calls.   I left them like 10 messages saying that the payout was a grand less then what was needed.  They told me if it was more they would negotiate and settle it w/ the shop.   They didn't.  Now for my Duc they are charging me $117.00 a month.  Foremost wants $60.

Anyone ever have an accident with foremost?

I was with Progressive for my last few bikes.  When I got my 696 they wanted like $950 a year - based on me saying I was only going to ride 2000 miles a year. HA!

I called Geico.  We insure both family cars through them.  They got me full coverage with the works for around $400 a year.  I told the woman on the phone that I'm going to sound like one of the dumb commercials but "I just saved 500 dollars by switching to Geico".  It made her laugh and I didn't look back.

Progressive was really cheap when getting me my payout for my accident also.  The other driver was found to be 100% at fault and they really didn't want to cover anything and kept telling me to take it up with the other insurance company.  They didn't want to have anything to do with that.  They were really hard to get hold of, didn't want to come out to photograph my gear (The other guy's insurance company sent out an impartial adjuster).  I finally got them to schedule time for me to come in and everyone was out of the office at the scheduled time and I had to sit around and wait for an hour.

You are in TEXAS so you are in luck!!!

Loyds of London offers insurance in Texas via General Electric.

***This is no joke***

They do buisiness as "Electric Insurance"
They do NOT advertise.
You do not need to work for G.E. to get in on the deal.
Another board member here (and also in Texas) turned me on to them -he used to work for G.E.
His wife made several claims in one year -TWO were her fault.  She didn't get "dropped", and her rates never went up.
He said she got great customer service and repairs were made quickly.

I just bought a 350Z and Geico wanted $860 for six months of coverage...
So my buddy said I should give Electric Insurance a call...
(he had also bought a 350Z for his wife for Christmas and knew what his insurance cost was)
Electric wanted $1100 for the whole year of identical coverage!

"I just saved 36% by switching from GEICO"  [laugh]

I'm going to switch my three bikes and my house too!  $$$

1-800-227-2757

Talk to 'em!   [thumbsup]

<edit> Just Googled them and found this:
Quote"Electric Insurance Company is a national writer of personal insurance products including auto, homeowners, renters, condo and umbrella. We were established in 1966 to serve the needs of General Electric employees and have since expanded our offerings to the general public."

-Which means it's not a "Texas only" thing  [thumbsup]

Insurance depends on your zip code (not just state), your record, age, marital status, credit report etc etc.

There is no right answer.

Call up every ins co you can find locally and get a quote.  Ask them for a fax copy and that you are comparing.

When you get a lowball, call up your other preferred co and send them a copy of the quote.

I use Geico for everything.  Whenever they don't give me a good quote, I get other quotes, call them back and tell them I am taking my business (home, 3 cars and 7 bikes) elsewhere.  They always come thru.

Insurance varies so much by state...

I had Foremost, they were cheapest for a new rider in Washington but wanted over $1900 a year when I bought the Monster (three years' experience riding) so I switched to Progressive.  I didn't know they might lower my rates at renewal--haven't had the Monster a year yet.

Hate State Farm. They told my buddy that his accident wouldn't raise his rates, since it was a one-vehicle accident, sold him a Gap accident policy--then dropped him.  They dropped my sister after a fender-bender while she was working for them fifteen years ago.

Make sure you don't use a broker, You'll pay their extra fees.  Shop on-line with the company directly ( I use progressive ) to avoid fees.
I went to a broker to save some time looking for cheap insurance. I have a clean record and am married. After buying insurance from the broker I found their hidden fees, $200 bucks which I could have avoided if purchased directly.

Find a different broker, the broker is supposed to get commission from the insurance company.  If the broker is large they have purchasing power and can get a better rate.  My broker beat Progressive's direct price by a significant amount.  When Progressive got greedy, one phone call to the broker got me a new company for hundreds less.  Like every other profession, some are good, some are not.

Thanks for the tip, I learned the hard way. I left that broker and did my own dirty work.
