"Maybe you're not a metal bender and your welding skills are not the best, don't despair, there's always wood. Portuguese carpenter Carlos Alberto remade a Vespa with an absolutely beautiful laminated wooden body."
wholly shmokes...that thing is GORGEOUS!
also shows a tremendous amount of skill and craftsmanship....IMHO, moreso than a great vast majority of the bike builders out there.
I could not even paint it to look that good [thumbsup]
wonder if he's gonna make a gel comfort seat for it. looks a little bit hard right now.
Cool. I was going to ask if he rides it, but then I saw this pic.

Looks like he built a motorcycle as well.

Wow, that is a great piece of crafstman ship. I wonder what's next from that guy.
Just gorgeous. I would want to just keep that in my living room and not ride it.
Wow, A+ examples of skill, creativity, and dedication.
The fact they are actually ridable, and that he does just tops it off.
I saw that too and was amazed :o
I've long wanted a Vespa.
Now I want THAT one!
Man-think of the epic scene I would have next time my bike caught on fire!

weight is a TREMENDOUS decrease, but what amount would be needed to ensure structural integrity. (calling all engineers to analyze this scooter)

does 'everything' need to be analyzed?
It's a cool bike and scooter.
Isn't that enough?

Maybe he laminated much of the original scooter?

Very cool bike and scooter; definitely.
The original "weight" question was from me, and I was just curious.
However, I am with that dead old white guy who said, "The unexamined life is not worth living."
I like to build and cutomize bikes, I'm not so good at it. So I'm interested to learn about materials of which I am ignorant; i.e. wood.
Isn't that okay? :)

If you remember your WWII history, the most successful bomber that the British had was the de Havilland Mosquito. It was wood. The ministry of defense rejected the plan to use more of them. The end result was heavy losses of planes and people by going with the heavy bomber strategy....Should have stuck with the wood...LOL Sorry to get off topic.

I don't understand the purpose of the flat board on the front of the downtube. Pretty freakin cool otherwise. [thumbsup]

Curiosity is one thing.
Examination is great.
Over analyzing every detail is over the top IMO.
It looks to me like it works...and that's all I need to know.
What does he use to grease the sliders on the WOODEN shocks....... [bacon] grease?
Those things are unbelievable.
