As many of you know, I'm moving from North Carolina to Oregon. Right now, this is just a place holder to organize some things.
I'll be leaving NC on Feb. 17th and hope to make it to Arkansas on the first day.
Then hopefully I'll make it to New Mexico the next day.
Then on to somewhere in California.
ETA: Mother, of course, will be driving with me on this trip since this whole trip is about moving to him.

The boy wears the pants in this family when it comes to stuff like this, I follow his lead and he's leading me through NM and SoCal. We've got people to meet in both places and want to deal with as little weather as possible since my car can't have chains on the tires.

Yup. We may be able to be there earlier. Its an 11.5 hour drive according to google maps so if we leave early in the morning like we're planning, we might be getting there around dinner time.
So we may be able to plan a dinner but its all so dependent on how tired we are and stuff. If we have an extra day available we may stick around for lunch in Bako on the 20th and then head north through Cali.

Not if you are going to Joels.
why?
Way outta the way, but a nicer drive. If you have everything tied down well, you could take the 33 [evil]
Don't know if it's too late and if you have places that are out of the way but PCH is almost always the right choice. A little slower than 5 but so worth it, so pretty. There's a stretch of Route 1 between Hardy and Legget, CA that will make you want to motor all the way there from Oregon just to ride it. It's got one of those yellow signs with the crooked arrow that means curves ahead, then in little letters below it says "Next 22 Miles". Sweet piece of road! Saved my attitude on day three of a miserable headwind.
Then again when my wife moved from Cali to Portland I had to drive a big U-Haul truck up PCH a section of the coast to avoid snow at Grant's Pass. Fourteen hour trip. A little less than fun, those things have bad handling and weak brakes when they're loaded.
Either way, good luck with the trip.
Scott
I'm not a fan of doing the PCH unless the weather is really bad on 5 because I just want to get the trip over with. This isn't a sight seeing trip unfortunately and we aren't leaving much time for delays as it is.
If its absolutely necessary to take the PCH, then I'll go for it. If not, I'd rather just get home as quickly as possible. :-\

I didn't leave room for Mother in the trunk so I guess he'll have to ride up front. I've got some work files and a smidge more clothes to throw in the back and thats done.

Seriously, my moto stuff took up 30% of the space. Bulky kitchen stuff (pots, pans, plates that I want to keep in the family) is another 30%. And my apparel, including shoes is another 30.
The last 10% is reserved for Mother's stuff. ;D

JBub, you are the lightest-travelling woman I have ever seen. Strong work ;D
Joel showed up around lunch time today. Big suprise that he would show up when there is food around, huh? Anyway after we ate we loaded up JBubble's bike into the back of the pickup and everything seemed to go smoothly but, there was something bothering me that I can't quite put my finger on. For starters he was wearing a giant sombrero and only spoke to me in Spanish. Then on the way out of the restaurant he collected all the tips that people left on their tables and muttered something about payback and if they wanted a tip they could have the tip of one of his body parts (sorry my Spanish is rusty so I couldn't quite make out the rest). Then he jumped in his truck to leave so walked over to give him directions back to Bakersfield and he said "I don't need no stinkin directions". He waved goodbye but he only used one finger (I guess he must have hurt his hand or something) and he headed off towards the Mexico border, yelling something about kissing his eggs, never finding him, etc.(again my Spanish is very rusty). Anyway, I am sure everything will go according to plan, whatever that may be.

That didn't quite work out, now did it? Well, the lyrics pretty well speak for themselves.
"Another White Dash"
There is
Something exciting about leaving everything behind
There is something
Deep and pulling leaving everything behind
Something about having everthing
You think you'll ever need
Sitting in the seat next to you
And I watch
Another white dash
Another white dash
Another white dash
Fly beside us
And I watch
Another white dash
Another white dash
Another white dash Fly beneath us
Away away
There is
Yelling of an engine a constant rattling door
There is serious
Deep and mumbles
A conversation I'm not it
Flickering lights
Shadows of trees
Makes me blink me eyes
Makes the land
Appear like a really old movie
And I watch
I got a heart fuuuuull, of rubberbaaaaands
That keep... getting....caught on...things
And I count
Another white dash
Another white dash
Another white dash
I drift off at eighty...something!
And I count
Another white dash
Another white dash
Another white dash
Out of time with the music!!

Yeah it's a tease... IT shows the video title - so I knew what song it was... then there's the big ole 'play' button in the middle. But when you click it it just says 'Embedding disabled by request'
Stingy innertube f'ers
Try clicking above or below the dreaded 'Embedding disabled by request' and see if it sends you to the video on the You Tube sight. Worked for me.

Day 4:
Virgil feels like absolute shit but we had a wonderful breakfast with bp and lm. Thank you guys for opening your home to us. We started driving at about 10-1030am. Going through the Mt. Shasta area was beautiful. In fact, northern Cali was really cool. We made the decision in Redding, CA to push all the way through to home that night. We got home at about midnight and crashed. Saturday was spent chilling out and doing nothing too. We stuck to I-5 since there were rumors of icy conditions on 97 (the backroad we were gonna take).

what about checking on my house?
and that plane looks like a P3 heavy air tanker. they use em out west to fight forest fires. painted the same colors as coast guard stuff though......so its ok.
except mother should have told you that
It was
I'm a dumbass, didn't even consider that
I was wondering what a CG fixed wing was doing pulling some of the manouvers it was doing
for a bit i thought it might be a 130, then it put its port tip in the dirt and spun a 180.
The pilot was seriously putting the spurs to it whatever it was

Translation: He thought the plane he saw near Herm's place was a C-130 at first but then figured out it wasn't after the plane made some abrupt maneuvers.
Not that the C-130 won't move when you tell it to.

Thank you for sharing your trip with us JBubble, Virgil, Sammich Maker and Mother ;D

this is the time of year when they start doing a lot of pre season work ups....pilot training, etc....
unfortunately, its also a time of year when a few of those aging air frames give out....never pretty

that sounds like a carnival ride. you know it's going to give, you just don't know if it will happen while you're on it.

Yes, yes they are. But have you ever watched Fat Albert yank-n-bank? He's no slouch.
Either way, congrats on making the transcontinental trek and still talking to each other. [beer]

yeh.... most of the airframes that are used for aerial firefighting are waaaaaay past there intended service life. even the P3's have been flying since the early 60's. most of the really old ones have crashed, or been taken out of service when others of the same make start crashing too much.
this old PB4Y was a left over from WW2, used to fight fires.
it crashed on a fire i was fighting in colorado back in 2002
(http://farm1.static.flickr.com/98/242825301_5825e40b6f.jpg?v=0)
i was a mile or so up the road from where it went down.....not a pretty site. the wing that you can see separated from the rest of the aircraft, fell to the ground on the side of an open to the public state highway, next to a trail head. the rest of the aircraft came down in a ravine on the other side of the road. the trailhead parking lot was full of public watching the aircraft work the fire. pure luck that no one on the ground suffered injury.

What about the pilot and crew?
i prefer to think that they died in the original explosion
oh. [bang]
You didn't mention explosion, should have guessed from the pict.

Day 3:
Some little crazy homeless dude scared the crap outta me in AZ when we stopped for breakfast. He came up and knocked on my window and asked if we wanted "fetishes".
Now who in their right mind says no to that?!?!

It seems the same. I've always thought of the US as a big country with a lot of diverse landscapes and the trip just affirmed that.
We went from some of the oldest mountains in the US that are full of hardwoods, through some of the prairies, then through the steppes, mesas, and desert, up the valleys in California, and home to the cold rainforest in the PNW. And that was only half the country.
I'm glad we drove it instead of shipping everything and flying.
Though, I coulda done without the crazy little native american guy offering me fetishes. And being called Virgil.

is a drop kick from a midget really that scary? i mean all you really have to do is make sure she doens't get your knee and your set mom.
you gotta lay the ground rules right off the bat, otherwise they get all high and mighty on you.

ground rules...hhmmm rule one, no kicking.
Are there still Burma Shave signs along older Highways . Signs that look like they have been there for 40 years ?
For those that don't know what Burma Shave signs are / were. They were a line of signs that told a short little diddy that may have rimmed and ended in "Burma Shave. " Dolph :)
Glad you two made it safely home! Thanks for sharing the pictures. [thumbsup]

It's ok, my truck with 41K on the clock is really proud of its check engine light. Been on for the past 2-3K because or a "small evap leak."
Sounds like a fun trip, gotta check it out at home so I can see the pics ~

that pic must have been around tehapci (sp?). The speed limit is 75, so he's getting passed by everyone!!!! [laugh]
That's like doing the speed limit on I-285 in Atlanta... last time I was there, I was going well over the limit (like 20+) and felt like a goober because it seemed I was in the middle of a NASCAR race.

I've met the kicker...she is a IZ_ little ball of cuteness. Like an attack Chihuahua. :P
If you're tall enough, or have really long arms... you can do the old hand on the forehead trick - even if she tries to kick you. Just watch out I hear tell she bites too, so keep you're fingers up and away from the bitey hole

The check engine light is not on. The lights illuminated are the cruise control and the one that tells you that you've set the lights to automatic.

What's the light that says "check" with what looks to be a wrench next to it? Below the speedo, near the gas gauge.

Forgot to mention that while we were going across 40 in the southwest, we saw a Monster (silver with shotgun stock pipes so probably an S2R 1000) on a truck with other bikes, heading east on 40.

QuoteWell, I rapped upon a house
With the U.S. flag upon display
I said, "Could you help me out
I got some friends down the way"
The man says, "Get out of here
I'll tear you limb from limb"
I said, "You know they refused Jesus, too"
He said, "You're not Him
Get out of here before I break your bones
I ain't your pop"
I decided to have him arrested
And I went looking for a cop
