Title: If you could only drink one beer
Post by: Holden on January 26, 2009, 11:45:14 PM
...for the rest of your life, what kind/brand/brew/type/etc. would it be?

And nothing too exotic, because you'd be paying for it; and nothing too intense, because you'd be drinking a lot of it... so, in your opinion, what's the all singing, all dancing staple-beer-that-should-always-be-on-tap to rule them all? As for a benchmark, practical, just drink-out-of-the-bottle beer, it's probably gonna be a lager, but not necessarily.

Personally, I would choose Kirin Ichiban. I know they say variety is the spice of life, but it's so good with food that whenever I'm drinking something else, I usually end up washing it down with an Ichiban, to cleanse my palate. Maybe I have some weird mutant Ichiban sensor genes, but nothing else (that I've tried) comes close for me. The smell, the aftertaste of fresh bread...

Sometimes I worry that if I drink it exclusively, it will become trite and I'll lose my taste for it. But the more I drink of it, the worse everything else tastes in comparison. This discourages me from trying anything new, so I'm curious about yourâ€"not favorite, per seâ€"but standard beer. Hopefully I'll end up with more than one!

Pilsner Urquelle

I fell in love with it on my honeymoon in Prague.

But only one beer for the rest of my life?

That'd be like asking me to only have sex with one woman from now on.

Uh, wait a second...

I like my Guinness and I like by micros and PBR's but if it's for life, Smithwicks comes to mind as "the one."

Do microbrewerys count? or does it have to be mass produced? becasue micros are kinda cheating since no one knows how it taste like.

Id have to go for Bluemoon Winter or Yuengling..... id be happy with either

For microbrews, Blue Point Hoptical Illusion or Coney Island

Yeah, I guess microbreweries don't really count (I'm really looking for a few new ones to try that I could find at the grocer). ;)

one beer? that's a really, really tough call... :P

hmm...

red strip
new belgium fat tire
guinness
flying mokey ale (a beer i've never had from the bottle. only on tap.)

but to narrow it down to one?

red stripe or fat tire. i just can't choose.

Funny, I'm actually drinking a Red Stripe right now. This is one beer that I truly want to like (hooray, marketing!), but am not totally sure about. It has a sort of... tangy honey flavor to it. God, tastes/smells are difficult to describe... maybe it's kind of like... cornbread?

It would be good with chili. But it has kind of a sickly-sweet nose.

I don't think we were meant to be. :'(

yeah, one beer is a tough call.

the easy answer is guinness. but the first time I had kilkenny on draught made me think otherwise.

very... VERY... arguable seconds are fat tire or echigo.

I absolutely love Guinness but it's not exactly quenching on a hot day.

Sooo...   my all purpose beer has to be original Coors banquet.   [thumbsup]

When you all say Guinness, do you mean the "serve extra cold" variety with the widget that doesn't satisfy das Reinheitsgebot?

It's like water. :-[

Echigo looks worth a try. Even if Asahi and Sapporo didn't quite live up to Ichiban's standards, it would be weird to find out that I have a Japanese beer fetish. :o

I'd have to say for mainstream everyday beer for me would be Bass Ale.

If we are going with smaller Craft Brews. I would Drink Dogfish 60 Minute IPA.

Post by: KnightofNi on January 27, 2009, 08:07:19 AM
i think i would cry. then i would start drinking a lot more rum and whiskey to soothe the pain.

my immediaate reaction is Pocono Lager, but I can't seem to find it very often if at all. it's been over a year since i last saw it and it's not brewed that far away.
so in order to actually have beer i would go with my standard utility beer, Yeungling Lager. but it better not come from the florida plant.

I was drinking Modelo Especial for a while.  It's a bit on sweet side like a lot of Mexican beers.  I also like Negro Modelo, but I think people discovered it, and it went up in price.  It is good, but I wouldn't pay microbrew prices for it every day.  I have to go with Guinness as my desert island beer.

I ordered one of those in a pub in England, and I got an eye roll.  I was served a Tiger or something instead, which was good (and warm).  I thought Newcastle is to England as Fosters is to Australia?

That was my impression too.

When I was there, if I didn't have a Guinness I'd typically go for something like Boddington's.

Every Australian I've ever talked to doesn't drink Fosters.  It's the Australian beer Americans drink AFAIK.  We lived off VB the month I was in Australia.  Don't recall seeing much, if any Fosters while I was over there.  It was joked about a lot

Given free reign, I'd pick Westmalle Tripel. My favorite of the Trappist Ales.

For something closer to home, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA. I've had the 60 minute, the 90 minute and 120 minute. All good, but the 90 & 120 are sippers. I'd have to go with the 60 for real drinking.

it depends how its served....

On tap; Pilsner Urquell
Bottle;  Bernard
At a hockey game on a plastic cup; Budvar
In a can; Does it matter taste like tin anyway.

So if I had a lackey to pull me a beer when ever I had the hankering, my only beer would be Pilsner Urquell

The Czechs make good beer.

Realistically, I would say Warsteiner Dunkelweiss

If it was a fantasy beer, I would have to say Sam Adam's Utopias. One of the guys from Boston broke out a bottle at the end of the new product meeting last night. I had 2 small glasses of it and am madly in lust with it now. Of course, once that ran out, he started handing out bottles of Triple Bock and Chocolate Bock...

Its the every-day drinkin' beer. Miller High Life.

Not that its the best beer out there, by any stretch, but its pretty much my every-situation beer.

Playing some video games: High Life and Ramen.

Shitty day at work: Sauza Hornitos with the juice of a lime.

Today that one beer would be Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre. Ask me again in a month and it will probably be something else. Raison D'Etre is not my favorite all time brew, but I can get a six of it for what one 750ml bottle of Saison Dupont (my all time favorite) costs.

If you've never had a Raison D'Etre try one. It's as close as any American micro brewer has gotten to a real Belgian Strong Ale. (my opinion of course)

It kinda blows my mind though. I'm working down a sixer of DFH Shelter Pale Ale and it's not even close to being as good as Raison D'Etre. Kinda reminds me of Sam Adams. Some are great and some are really not so great.

Now if money were a real concern (and it always is) then I'm drinking Yuengling Lager. I havnt had anything that cost as low as 19 dollars a case that comes close to tasting as good as Yuengling.

I would drink a pint of fresh guiness...........from the brewery in Dublin.
Now that would be memorable seeing as I live in Washington State.
That would be a pint to remember. [drink]

Guinness   [drink]   Its even got an official animated icon on the board.

It's a drink, a steak marinade, a disinfectant, a floor polish, fuel for my old army truck, and I'm pretty sure it cures cancer too.

I do like me some Guiness, but it's rare around here on draft and everybody who carries it otherwise keeps it cold.

Samuel Smiths would probably be my pick if you could only have one beer, but which one?  Taddy Porter, Oatmeal Stout, or maybe organic Lager.

+1 Frazaskaner Dunkel or Heff.

My easy to find at the grocery store choice and generally super high quality brew. Paulaner Original Munich or Heff.

They are superbly made, consistent and readily available around most of the country.

For beer lovers the Sunset Grille in Allston, Ma is a great place.  I was there last week for lunch which in turn....  turned into dinner.  [beer]

If I had to choose.....  Erdinger Dark.  A co-worker turned me on to it and I had Kappys, a local liquor chain, order me a case.  Which was $30 for 12 bottles.  So..............  it's MY beer.  I don't share it with any one!

I disagree. I have been there also. Walk in and look around you see lots of Fat Tire Ale pictures and such. I tell the waitress that I wanted a Fat Tire Ale, and she said they don't carry it. What a bummer. :'(

That's a good one.  Brooklyn Brown or Dogfish head's 60 min for me, or....forget it, so many good ones to choose from.
