the only prob is i was looking at the local groups and i think i might snap. a lot fo them look like the kids i see at the ren faire and tell to stop trying so hard.
a few of the more major events take place around 4 hrs from where i live. ;D*adjusts pocket protector*
I heard my computer laugh when I clicked the link.
It might be cool if it were a different crowd.

really though, what other crowd would do it?
the crowd that only thinks of the middles ages as between 35 and 50?
I saw that same episode on Discovery.
Some of those guys and it is 95% guys spend a lot of $$ on costumes.
Ren Fest every year or two is enough for for me.

my g/f and i have season passes ;D
though we don't dress up for it.
Go for it, do what you want. Looks like it could be a good time. I'd bet there's some good folks there... but of course there will be some really annoying ones - but that's how most of the world is, innit?
Unless you go nuts on buying shit, it looks like going 1 time would be pretty in expensive.
I used to know some people in the Society for Creative Anachronism.

I never thought geeks in home made armor could be so uptight. :-\

oofa, they seem a little too up tight. Seems like the dagohir folks a faster and looser with what you can do...
After thinking about it a bit, I do think the actual event would be fun. But as soon as its all stop then what. I think of the end of The Breakfast Club, after they all got along, then afterwards went there own ways. I'm not saying I'm too cool either, I consider myself quite the nerd.
i always thought of the SCA as a bunch of people that really wished they could live in the middle ages, but didn't want to give up modern convenience.
they use the idealized and romanticized parts of the history and recreate that as best as they can. they were the ones that were always stuck in a book. they won't break character until the event is over or unless they absolutely have to.
these dagorhir people seem more like the agressive geeks who were always playing with a broomstick like it was a sword. they might have their character's storyline all worked out, but they are more into the fantasy and having fun than trying to pretend it's something it's not.
WTF?!
I was just telling my wife yesterday about the LARPers I saw at Zilker Park on Sunday. Now this?! ???
You're always getting excited about "talk like a pirate day" Kni so why don't you find a group that likes to play battleship on the high seas?!
Friggen swashbuckler!! :P
there's a big diff in larping and dagorhir.
you won't hear anyone yelling out spells at dagorhir, you will actually get hit with an arrow.

"Dagorhir is the oldest larping organization"
-Renaissance Magazine Vol 1 #3, Issue #3
-Dagorhir Battle Games are many things to many people. Dagorhir combines fast-paced full-contact combat simulation with elements of live-action-role-playing. i.e.: LARPING!! ;)
I for one cannot wait to see some of the clips from your epic battle scenes in medieval..
New England!

SCA is absurdly uptight. With an average BMI of 32 and the market on male pattern baldness cornered, what else have you got?
Out of curiosity, how is this much different than paintballing?
Aside from the fact that you'd be beating fellow dorks with a Nerf Battle Axe instead of leaving welts on weekend-warrior tool-bags.

Don't worry T. Even though you're considering a larper lifestyle..the Duc and the Dual-sport still make you
somewhat cool in my book! [thumbsup]
When I read the title for SCA, I imagined a steampunk organization fighting Nazis riding on dinosaurs. Too bad it's not nearly that cool.

NOTHING is that cool. Nothing. Except maybe

I think he'd be on the steampunk side (Jesus hates Nazis. And Cantaloupe). Then, out of make the beast with two backsin NOWHERE, Joe Satriani comes flying in on Pegasus playing
(http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y239/Jervisaurus/steampunk_guitar_1.jpg)
and shreds until all the Nazis' faces melt off like in Raiders. Too bad Satriani wasn't Jewish. Auschwitz wouldn't have stood a chance.
In the larping community's defense, they're normally a really good bunch (I use the word 'normally' hesitantly :) ). I never got into it but I've had friends that were and everyone who participates is out to have a good time with very little bullshit and drama.
^^^^ Coolest post of the thread [thumbsup]
Hmmm... There's a small community of people that do the play fighting deal in a park weekly at Cal Poly SLO. Always thought it was kinda goofy myself but they looked like they were having fun.
I saw a group here doing this in the park.
i stopped and watch and also thought it looked like fun...but then I noticed they didnt look like they were having fun at all...they were uber-intense about it [laugh]
The groups playing bicycle polo and the punk rock kickball looked like they were having more fun (and beer 8))

Probably not much different from the uber intense re-enactment/scenario type paintball games. Either way, you're pretending to be something you're not, with mildly dangerous big boy toys. I play paintball, don't really do the scenario scene, but the couple themed 'big games' I've played have been a good time. I figure this would be about the same. But hey, I'm a nerd... I play with computers and paint miniatures... so YMMV

In DC kickball went from silly fun to taking themselves a little too seriously. It went from the goofy early adopters, to the hipster thing to do... and yes from that other thread, hipster is a dirty word...
I went to a local SCA event this past fall and it turned out to be a blast! This particular local chapter seems to be made up of 3 distinct subgroups: (was told this is how most of the SCA is)
1 - Battle re-enactors. Some of this stuff gets fairly intense. Physical prowress is required for the heavy swordfighting and jousting. Cool thing is if one wants to become king you have to fight to earn it and fight to keep it.
2 - Court ladies and general craftspeople. The craftwork was mildly interesting but kind of neat to see how people had to make things back in the day. Most all the court ladies are into wearing those old school corset things that shove their boobies right out in the open. (yay boobies!) Court had to be the most god awfully boring things I've witnessed however.
3 - Brewers/alcoholics. This is the group I was hanging out with. Very loud and boisterous/obnoxious. We spent the whole day getting shit-housed on whiskey and home brewed mead. Not to mention generally harassing the ladies and looking at their boobies. (which everyone remarkably was perfectly fine with. Again, yay boobies!)
Everyone was especially friendly and accomodating. My friend Shelley even auctioned me off to one of the ladies as a man-whore. It was an interesting evening to say the least! [evil] [evil] [evil] Thanks Shelley!
