Title: Spark plugs Post by: Porsche Monkey on February 06, 2009, 02:33:40 PM Whats the part number for the NGK spark plugs that fit a 97 M900? Trying to see if I can get a set local without having to go to the dealership.
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Howie on February 06, 2009, 02:57:54 PM NGK DCPR8E part# NG4339
Most parts places stock the DCPR8E plugs, but not that part#, which has the removable terminal lug and the right size hex. You might look here and create a shopping list: http://www.ca-cycleworks.com (http://www.ca-cycleworks.com) Chris or Candice will take good care of you. Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: ghosthound on February 07, 2009, 03:42:39 AM speaking of plugs... whats the general replacement schedule for motorcycles?
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Howie on February 07, 2009, 05:44:55 AM Ducati says every 6 & 12 or 750 & 15, depending on year. Can you get away with a longer interval? Probably. But since my bike only has two...
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Porsche Monkey on February 07, 2009, 11:23:03 AM So apparently my horizontal cylinder is running correctly but my verticle one is running very rich. The old plug was carbon fouled. These plugs only had a few thousand miles on them but were cheap champions. Is there any mixture adjustment screws that I can play with? 97 M900
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Howie on February 07, 2009, 02:20:19 PM You can adjust idle mixture, but it won't make much of an overall difference. Did you have a misfire or is the plug just darker? Most people just turn the mixture screws out equally, on your bike three turns should work. The mixture screws are over the float bowl in the middle of each carb. The idle speed screw is the bigger screw by the right carb. the other screw is the synch screw. Sorry, no picture. Best would be setting mixture with an exhaust analyzer to about 4% CO. If you don't have a tool to synch the throttle bodies after you are done I suggest you leave it until your next service or have someone with the proper equipment do it.
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Porsche Monkey on February 08, 2009, 01:29:49 PM The reason I changed the plugs was because I was having an off idle no load or low load missfire. If I'm doing around 30 or so mph it will have an intermittent miss. If I'm doing 80 it runs great. Its still doing the same thing after the new plugs. Guess ill have to look towards the plug wires and coils. There's about 35,000 miles on her.
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: DesmoDiva on February 08, 2009, 01:53:49 PM Sounds just like when my horizontal plug wire was grounding out. Took a while to diagnose because there was no visable spark along the wire. It was grounding out through the boot down in the cylinder head.
Try wrapping the exterior of the boot in electrical tape. This was the temporary fix the dealer used on my bike till a new plug wire came on the slow boat from Italy. Lucky for you the vertical plug wire is cheaper than the horizontal. Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Porsche Monkey on February 08, 2009, 02:26:50 PM Thanks Diva, I have given them a once over but I'll look at them a bit harder.
Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: DarkMonster620 on December 04, 2010, 11:38:20 AM Hey, nice thread, anyone has had experience with BOSCh spark plugs? They show a P/N XR5DC ... I still have to order or purchase at stealership here ... I had Champions as OEM and they worked great ... changed to iridium and also worked great ... until ... well, using 'good old used plugs' at time of writing ...
If any Ducati tech can share some light on the BOSCH product ... TKS!!! Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: Howie on December 04, 2010, 03:02:12 PM NGK DCPR8E part #NG4339, your bike will love them. About $4 each here in the US. If you can't find them in Panama our sponsor, California Cycleworks will be glad to send you a pair.

If any Ducati tech can share some light on the BOSCH product ... TKS!!! I think most if not all of us stick with NGK. If you're having plug fouling problems with the correct heat range NGK chances are there is something else wrong, like a bad wire, very rich mixture or excessive oil getting into the combustion chamber. Sorry if I can't answer your question about Bosch plugs. I've used them in cars without any obvious problems but I don't think that relates at all to Ducati use. Can you post a closeup photo of your fouled plug(s)? Not that I have any talent for diagnosing problems based on internet plug pictures but maybe someone else can help. It was an issue discussed in another posting I did a couple days ago ... regarding 'exploding and throwing flames thru the exhaust' ... it was a one time only thing that took care of itself, even though it fouled my iridium plugs ... Just asking about the other brands since I'm now 'working' for a company that distributes Bosch and the owner can get me a box[min order] of the correct ones for my bike ... well, actually, for many Ducatis ... Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: ducpainter on December 05, 2010, 05:43:45 AM I'd run the Bosch plugs without hesitation. They make good products.
I think the reason we all tend to use NGK is marketing and availability. Title: Re: Spark plugs Post by: hillbillypolack on December 05, 2010, 01:05:35 PM When you install your new plugs, dab a bit of anti-seize paste on the threads. I just swapped plugs in the S2R, and whoa were they coarse feeling (original plugs). Aluminum heads and steel plugs don't always play nice.
Also, get somewhere close to torque specs for obvious reasons.
