is that  the 405 freeway in LA at rush hour?  no wait a minute is that the 10 freeway? and downtown LA in the background

its the US i think based on all the suv's and the rectangular license plates.

Looks like an exit for Sydney.

Mmmmmm.  Splitting is so tempting sometimes, despite the legal issues.  I'd like to see more bikes on the road too, but just think how many of those people you WOULDN'T want to see on a motorcycle (or in any vehicle for that matter).  Cool pic, btw.

i was thinking the same thing - it looks like the other side of the road is flowing (or at least has room to be).

neat pic either way

I've always wondered how that worked.  How fast is LA traffic moving?  5 mph?  10?  And how fast can you split?  25?  Can you use the shoulder legally?

I can't speak for LA, but commuting in the Bay Area, my general guideline is only split if traffic's moving 45mph or less and never faster than 15mph over traffic speed.

I think its LA too, but it reminds me of the 80 heading south toward Emeryville & Oakland.

That's the general lane splitting rule. Also don't split between carpool and normal traffic because crossing the double yellow can get you a ticket. This is still where most people split though because it feels the safest and generally has the most space. It's also usually the dirtiest though. And no, you can't ride on the shoulder legally. Technically you have to be in the same lane as a car (legal term is lane sharing).

Lanes in LA aren't that far apart (although it would be nice if they were).  ;D

you are allowed to lane share in cali, there may or may not be a specific speed limit you can do it or not, but the genearl idea is that if traffic is near standstill that you can then lanshare and take up less room than if you were just you in a lane.

hoewever, you will see people lane splitting at over 70mph when the traffic is going 60mph and that is just stupid...

i generally didnt' do it unless traffic was going slower than 20mph and then i would only be going maybe 5-10 mph faster than traffic.  but that is just me.

its not legal in any other US state besides cali i think.

the good thing about cali is that since most drivers know that motorcycles lane share, when you are in gridlock or stop and go traffic most drivers tend to me mindful of you and accually giv you a bunch of room to pass, not all but most drivers, are cool with it.

The traffic on the other side looks like its would be moving so I do question the shot as well.

I use to mess around with Long exposures all the time so that shot is possible but something is fishy about it to me.

Looks like an exit for Sydney.

Not the Sydney I live in... Apart from the "wrong side of the road" bit, there's also the point that I can't think of a single bit of road in Sydney that's 10 lanes wide - _maybe_ the Harbour Bridge approched from the north, if you count exit lanes and slip roads...

Remember Australia is ~80% the size of the US, with about the same number of people in it as New York...

Oh, definitely photoshopped... But that doesn't take away from the beauty of it...

yea, you can tell the spot that the bike cuts in front traffic the first time has been edited b/c the road surface looks very blurred compared to the other lanes next to it like a car has been photoshopped out.
