Title: Gas Milage & Octane .... simple poll & question
Post by: DuciD03 on May 13, 2008, 11:11:26 PM
May 13 08

Gentlemen & Chicks:

I have a M800ie; no engine modifications; all servicing was done up to 12 k miles; I officially have 20 k on the bike now; I'm getting, around the city, about 95 miles to about 11 litres (3 US Gal).  This doesn't sound very efficient.  Heavy on the throttle at times; I do like to leave the cagers behind at a light ....

I'm intrested to hear others gas milage (guess thats a poll) [coffee]

and if anyone can give suggestions on what may be causing such high gas consumption.

Cheers DuciD  [moto]
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Update note; May 14 08:

Thanks for the feedback so far; yes there is many factors the effect MPG performance; but generally it already looks like theres a range of between 35-45 MPG.  Milage is a good starting point to identify the mechanical health of an engine.  Below someone identified that a valve adjustment can make a significant difference in milage.  Keep em coming, I'll try to do a summary in a week or 2.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Duc Painter; thanks for setting up the poll; ... but how does this work? ....lol  Some detail about the bike, riding conditions etc is a factor; so a poll misses some of that detail.  Post on ducsters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
June 2 08

ok ...  been doing experiments with Octanes; similar but different rides so there's a difference in consistency; I ran the 94 octane forever but seem to be getting better milage form the 89 octane .... I know I'm not getting optimum milage and have purchased belts to replace then I'll do a valve adjustment. [popcorn]

I'm liking the 89 compromise;

also I'm pretty sure I'm noticing some gas stations have water in there gas ... hummmm!

This is a general summary below; could be affected by many factors.

March April 94 - 95 -105 Miles to 11-12 Litres
May 87 - 105 Miles to 11.5
May 89 - 113 miles to 12 Litre's :)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

June 3 08

New belts on; just walked in from the garage ... (no problem-o!  ;) )

------------------------------------------------------------------------

November 06 08

Thanks all for contributing  [bow_down]

So after some tweeks I beleive I'm good for about max about 130 miles to a tank, highway riding which gets me into 43 miles per gallon on the 89 octane.  Initially; i was getting crappy milage due to around town rides and some tuniing; I'm amazed at how much of a difference some parts cam make like a new did gold link X ring chain, V300 oil and warmer,  longer highway rides.

Also another observation, I'v experimented with laying on the tank and tucking, this is the most aerodynamic profile i can get and actually perfer this on the highway provided theres not alot of traffic.  Once I sit up it shaves off 5 miles an hour on the speedo.

I'll keep the poll open and chime in for future refrence all.

Now I'v got her off the road for the winter .... and in the process of winterizing for storage and next season.   I'll also be looking at the valves over the winter.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Oct 20 09

I'm still experimenting; I use 89 regularly; 91 and occasionally 87 ... 89 seems to be the happy medium ...

2 other s2r 800's I'v been using (dont ask ...) 89 seems to be the happy medium; but i cant help but think / feel that the 87 is cleaner burning, less stoot; and has slightly more pep...

... also what gas is most stable for storage?

Cheers DD  [moto]

42-43 mpg with my S4, running 89 octane.
I've gone 160 miles on a tank.

I haven't gotten a chance to bring her out and empty her on a full day of twisties yet, but city 70miles to the tank. ive been shutting my bike of at lights that last longer than ~10 seconds, and my MPG has shot up dramaticly, my last fill up was only 1.6gallons on 57 miles (I thought i was close to 2.5gals). Note: I do idle alot becasue i ride in NYC. Also i have the plastic 3gallon tank, which holds less fluid than i can at any given momment.

However, i have VERY loose valve guides, and someone said that their MPG shot up from 30mpg-40mpg just from getting that fix. so im hoping thats the case.

Probably would be good if everybody listed what year and model of Monster they have, and to make it easy to compare, how many miles per gallon they're getting.

While it's important info, miles per tank is influenced by so many things that it's not so helpful for comparison.

Ok, so it's mostly city riding and you're heavy on the throttle - That's a combination for low mileage.  Stop and go riding, lots of time idling per mile and fast starts is going to consume more gas than pretty much any other situation.  So, asking what other people are getting probably won't be as illuminating  as you'd hope since you're getting numbers for that riders style, and not yours.

42-43 mpg with my S4.

My '01 S4 gets maybe 40-42'ish, depending on what kind of riding I'm doing....The DP cams + full Termi system definitely don't help, but the compromise is well worth it to say the least....  ;D

-It's hard to say really, because I usually just pull over and fill up every 100 miles or so, just in case I decide to get lost on purpose, which I've been known to do!!   [moto]

I have an S2R1K and do over 100 miles per tank. I never had the yellow light come on as I fill it up as soon as I leave cause I dont want to deal with running out of gas. I guess I should run it down one of these days just to see how far it will go.

2005 M1k, I am doing like 40/45 m/g short freeway ride + city streets.. on w-ends for nice rides I've gone as much as 120 for the tank, I know there is still some gas in it but I usually fill it up and don't take the risk of running out of gas.

OK Factors effecting (or is that affecting) Include ....
Engine - 800
Riding style / Riding conditions- city, non commuting, sometimes heavy on the throttal
Modifications - none
Octane - I'm using 94; expensive; I'm going to try the 87 or 89 for a while; further comments??.
Mechanical adjustments - good to 12 k Miles
perhaps quality & oil weight - 15 -50 Motol full synthetic

along with the obvious weight of the rider; aerodynamics etc lol, - 195, ft fairing, polished helmet; upright riding style ... with 803 cc's it cant make that much difference

Thanks; Cheers Duci Dave

Duc engines seem to run better on regular gas unless you've gone to high compression pistons.

I just got 129 miles before my fuel light came on today. This  is mostly all freeway riding. In the city I usually get 50 - 60 miles before the light comes on.

I have also gone 20 miles more once the light comes on.

Scotty PM-ed me on my prompting because we have exactly the same bike but he has 1/2 the miles; he has some good insite and detail, thought he should get credit and share the knowledge. Thanks Scott. (you were joking about the tire pressure  ....)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just one thing to check before anything else, are you tires up to pressure?  Low pressure can really eat into your mileage.

My bike has about 6500 miles and the engine is 100% bone stock.  I do a good mix of riding: highway, mountain roads, around town.  I'm pretty easy on the bike getting around.  I leave the cars behind but that's not hard to do.  I flog it a little more in the mountains but not much.  It gets 42mpg pretty much no matter how I ride it.

I bought it from my friend, she put only 1800 miles on it in three years.  I've had it for just over a year.  I did the 6000 mile service at around 3500 miles at the end of last season.  It was getting around 50mpg but I richened the trim from a setting of 0 to around 7 or 8.  You need a Mathesis tester or VDSTS software to do this, it's the same function as the idle mixture screw on a carburetor.  I did this to get rid of a lean pop at around 3500rpm.  It was set lean from the factory to meet EPA/Euro3 emissions.  It's richer but not overly so and the pop is mostly gone now.  I can get it to go away completely but then it's so rich that I smell gas when it's idling.  I would need a PC3 or similar to get rid of it entirely and I've got better things to do with $300 right now.  After the adjustment mileage went to 42mpg.

Since you just had a service done they should have done the TPS reset, idle speed, and trim setting.  This should put you in good working order unless they are way off on something.  If it idles and runs smoothly with good throttle response your TBs are probably in balance.

Run you finger around the inside of the tail pipe and look at it.  Rich grey?  Just where you should be.  Black, too rich.  You can check the plugs too.  They should be light tan.  Black?  Too rich.  Light grey or white?  Too lean.

Krolik has an 800 with open air box, TPO beast kit, PC3, and cored or aftermarket exhaust.  That's pretty heavily modded and he gets 30-35mpg when we're in the mountains.  He can get around 45 or so if her really babies it.

but things can get a little wonky over time too.  It might be a good idea to check your belt tension & valve clearances.   If those are good then maybe get a TPS reset, TB balance, idle speed set, and trim set.  These are all the major engine adjustments that get done at a major service.  I find it hard to believe that you're so far out that it would take 25%  off your mileage but I guess stranger things have happened.

I'm guessing there is something wrong.  Take it back to the shop where you had it serviced and ask them about it.  Be courteous, be patient.  You get more flies with honey than vinegar.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Scott

Gets extremely annoying when the fuel light comes on at 65 miles  >:(  I am hoping a PCIII on top of the DP ECU will help a little.

i usually get just above 40 mpg.  i run 92-93 octane, whatever is highest at that particular station.  i tend to ride the bike pretty hard, but ive noticed myself taking it easier now that i ride my supermoto bike (which gets about 35-40 mpg).  04 m800,  mods are ducati performance exhaust, and pod filters.  no more mods until i get a pcIII.

and if it matters to your question, im about 270lbs.  i know that affects the supermoto pretty bad.  my buddy (160 lbs) rode it and got 50mpg, i get 40 on a good day and my dad (330 lbs) got about 30-32. so i know weight affects it some.

Termis, open airbox and FCRs, 87 octane, 6'1" and 180

40-45 mph commuting depending on highway/surface mix
45-50 mph fun riding

Much of the difference is wasted gas on warmups. My commute is 20-22 mi so that I'm warming the bike up 8 times per tank.

I get 170-180 miles per tank usually. I have gotten just over 200! ;D

Mileage was much worse with the stock Mikunis in spite of repeated attempts to get them dialed in. I'd get in the 30's and got only 120 to 140 (absolute best) on a tank.

I like to whack the throttle wide open now and again but mostly it's just fast and steady; 80 on the highway (with the occasional faster burst [evil]) and "somewhat" over the limit on back roads.

01 M750 Arrow high mounts, slightly open airbox, and 14t sprocket

I only run 87 octane and get 32-37mpg depending on how hard i'm riding. My mileage actually improves the harder I ride, cause during idle and the lower quarter of throttle opening I'm running way to rich.

Can't wait to install this jet kit thats sitting on my desk here.

I'm getting over 50, closer to 55 running 91.

bikes a 08 695, I've been riding it fairly conservatively because I'm a new rider and the bikes new. I also only weight 150lbs and all my riding is between 6k and 9k ft altitude, on back roads at 65-80mph..

I threw on a Quat-D high mount system, sound killer, louder then my brothers sportster  ;D (which is all thats really important), but 100 miles on it and my plugs are WHITE, with specks of metal.. way, way to lean.

I'm gonna throw the DB killers back in, see if that helps.. other wise stock will go back on and they'll wait till I can afford the f'n DP ECU.

'05 620, stock intake, high mount arrows= 48-50mpg

+ chopped lid, PC3, custom map= 40-45mpg

+ 750cc 11:1 FBF pistons and richened mix until it's run-in and retuned= 38mpg (I've put one tank through so far)

estimates based on average milage when my light turns on, and I end up filling 2.4gal pretty consistantly from that point.

E10 92 octane is the highest pump gas we've got here

01 900 with D&D exhaust, stock air filter, PCIII, 87 octane gas.  I get an average of 50-52 mpg.  But I do alot of highway driving to work and home 27 miles each way.  6 gear and about 65-70 mph.

I run high test in mine. I didn't think regular would be good for a high rev twin. But I'll try when this tank is gone. My fuel light doesn't work so I fill up at 100 miles. Yesterday  I put in 3.8 gal. in with 105 on trip odameter. Cost 15.00 dollars even. Sure would like to save som money on gas. I checked my mpgs once and it was 40 so I stick with that figure, my bike is a 900ie fbf (i think) slip ons and an upgraded ecu, (not sure of brand). And I cummute to work (5 miles rt), never really gets warm. And little piddly trips just buzzing around.
I'm not a fast rider so I only hit the throttle every once and again.

Post by: He Man on May 17, 2008, 12:44:41 PM
You really need to get that bike checked out. If your pumping 3.8 gals per 100 miles your not much over 20mpg.

High octane isn't ment for high rev, its for high compression, so its safe to use regular, and recommended.

Yep - good idea. Might be rich also. Up top in this thread exhaust pipe color is mrtioned. Mine's black so I'm going to run this tank out and stick in some 87 octane to see what happens then get some info from my dealer.
He set it up and it runs great but maybe I shouldn't be such a puss with the go switch. Problem is the way to work is definate slow speed (7 minutes). Don't really get out and just ride which is what it probaably needs.

Can you take the long "scenic" route to work? ;)

You really need to get that bike checked out. If your pumping 3.8 gals per 100 miles your not much over 20mpg.

High octane isn't ment for high rev, its for high compression, so its safe to use regular, and recommended.

Yeah, 105 miles with 3.8 gallons is just over 27mpg...

Mostly Stock 05 S4R
87 Octane
44 mph Freeway
140  per tank when the light comes on

Street I get about 10 less than that  :-\

Yeah I could take the "long senic route" but I need to be at work at 7 and am to lazy to get up any eariler than usual. What I need to do is take the long way home and get things really warm. I'm stuck driving a school bus for another week so my trips are all about 5 miles for now. When my wife's work gets caught up I'll start doing some week end rides and see how things work out. Might check on getting my light fixed too. When I fiirst got my bike I ran out of gas once at 143 miles. That gives me 37mpgs. I think my biggest problem is lack of throttle control, if I were smoother I bet my mileage would improve.

Stock 2002 ST4s
5.5 gal tank
165 miles ~= 3/4 of a tank

I put myself in the 30-40 mpg group, even though I often experience 40+ during out-of-city riding.

When I get the low fuel light, I still have 40+ miles before I'm dry. Muhaha

I'v run 94 octane to date; yesterday I filled up with 87 octane, I noticed the inner end of the exaust pipes are blacker as opposed to grey.  Wish i had pulled the plugs and photographed them before doing the switch for comparison sake.

Bike seemed to be running hotter; but yesterday was the hotest day of the year so far, its the first time I've seen the engine temp at a high of 227 F in city driving. Normally she runs at 207.

After riding for about 3 hours on Sat around the city running errands and taking scenic long cuts; finding some new asphalt, I did notice at the end of the day it took some time to idle smoothly after stopping for 1/2 hour.

06 S2R1000 with full Arrow CF system, stock airbox and ECU. Usually get about 44 mph. Did 2 tankfulls today for a trip fom CT to VT for BBQ and back. Both fillups returned 52 mpg. Sweet.

My experience has been that the 900's seem to get the best milage....  course I'm biased...

I routinely get over 150 miles to a tank on my 01 900.  I filled up today at 140 miles and put in 3.5 gals.  That's the first time I've filled up since the FBF slip ons got installed and the 6000 mile service was completed.  Mileage seems pretty close to what it was.

This is usually on 85 octane, yes in Colorado our low grade is 85.  Bike seems to run fine on it, so that's what I stick with!

Black?  Sounds like you're running rich which would explain your crappy mileage.  If there's no major problem you just need a tune up.

Changing octane won't change the fact that the bike is running rich.

low of 37-38 mpg when pushing it

high of 56 mpg when riding with the Harley group (and getting passed by Buicks in the twisties)

Okay, back to the gas mileage thing. On my last tank I got 33mpg with high test then I filled up with regular and only have 75 miles on that tank so I haven't refilled yet. And I forgot that the tank which I only got 27 on was the weekend I took the MSF advanced parking lot riding coarse so that may have affected the fuel consumption.
Although my plugs look like I running rich, the little light on my FBF ecu lights up (at idle and about 2000 to 2500) reading lean. Of coarse I have no idea if that is good/bad or indifferent. I'm still going to get it looked at by someone who knows more than me (Duck Pond) as soon as I get a chance. I have to get my truck running so if I have to leave my bike I can drive that (7 to 9 mpg). So, see even crappy mileage on my bike is better than my pick up.

June 2 08

ok ...  been doing experiments with Octanes; similar but different rides so there's a difference in consistency; I ran the 94 octane forever but seem to be getting better milage form the 89 octane .... I know I'm not getting optimum milage and have purchased belts to replace then I'll do a valve adjustment.

I'm liking the 89 comprimise;

also I'm pretty sure I'm noticing some gas stations have water in there gas ... hummmm!

This is a general summary below; could be affected by many factors.

March April 94 - 95 -105 Miles to 11-12 Litres
May 87 - 105 Miles to 11.5
May 89 - 113 miles to 12 Litres

Couple of other things effecting milage that people have pointed out;
.... gearing ... and the if I'm not mistaken 900's do seem to get great milage ... why?

S2R 800  14t sprocket, calculated 47 mpg at last fill up.

I do a mix of highway, in town, and back roads riding in NC.  I use 89 or 93 octane.  I'm certainly not conservative with the throttle.  Don't think i have ever gotten less than 40 mpg.

S4RT w/DP & Slip-ons runs rich!  Gas mileage is better running premium, 92=32gpm, 89=28gpm.  One thing that really kills mileage is sitting in traffic.  >10min  out of a 25min commute=24mpg.

2006 S2R800 Dark

-> When it was stock, went 120 miles on one tank, light was on for the last 20 miles or so. The S2R1K that I was riding with, his light came on at least 10 miles sooner than mine, but I engine braked a LOT less than him on that ride.  No real commute in Spokane, WA, just riding for fun.  Started with 15 miles on the bike, ended with little over 1K.  Mileage = 47-50 mpg

-> New mods: Quat D Exbox Exhaust, 14t, and removed the O2.  Seems that I don't get quite the mileage that I used to.  The light came on at 84 miles earlier this week (usually around 88-94, I'm noticing).  I have a short commute now (Bend, OR), about 6-9 miles one way depending on my route.  Not a lot of riding for fun either, just commuting, sometimes on the Parkway (45 - 65 mph) or through town (35 mph).  About 1.1K miles on the bike to where it's at now, 2.3K.  Mileage = right at 45 mpg

Have always used 91 octane (vaguely remembering reading the manual and it actually might have said to use 94 octane, which is unavailable anywhere I've ridden), was at around 2000ft elevation and currently around 3800ft elevation.  Fairly mellow rider, but have adjusted how I ride in the last few months.  Used to shift around 4K rpm and now shift only after 5K rpm.  Both cities use ethanol in their gas.  Also, the hottest the bike has EVER gotten for me was 97 degrees F (hottest day of the year at 92)...  I'm assuming that it will get warmer when it actually GETS warm outside...

laters,
m

Went on a ride yesterday. I did 128 miles and filled up 2.2 gallons. On tank 2, which spilled over to today, i did 125 miles which i have yet to fill up yet, but the light went on about 3 miles from home. So im guessing if i filled her now, it would be ~2.7gals. The last 35miles were all city riding.

So tank 1 gave  me 58mpg and tank 2 would give me 46mpg.

I usually get 25-35mpg city depening on how much lane splitting and angry I am, and 40 with incity highways.

ha!

I had forgotten about this poll and post; its intresting to hear what people are getting out of a tank of gas.

In order to get in 12 litres; about 3 ga you need to run beyond when the light comes on and into the reserve; which I wouldn't recommend ... do so at your own risk.

The most scientific I've been was a slab trip to Tahoe from S.F.

I got 55 MPG using 91oct. with a new 848 (which may be messing up this poll)
My millage varied the most depending on riding position. If I stayed in a tuck out of the wind I got almost 55MPG. If I sat up a bit I got around 50MPG.

1++ good point; I'v experimented with laying on the tank and tucking, this is the most aerodynamic profile i can get and actually perfer this on the highway provided theres not alot of traffic.  Once I sit up it shaves off 5 miles an hour on the speedo.

Yes, I'm an ubernerd.

Note that I'm recording my economy how generally do in Australia which is in litres per 100 km. 5 L/100km is 47.0 US mpg, 7 L/100km is 33.6 US mpg. The overall economy since new has been 5.67 L/100km, or 41.5 US mpg.

The economy changes by around 0.5 L/100km between winter and summer (the effect of the ecu adjusting for requiring more fuel due to denser air in winter), and has gained maybe 0.7 L/100km as the motor has loosened up. To be even nerdier, the economy difference between winter and summer is pretty consistent with the additional fueling requirements. The temperature variation is rougly 25 degrees, which would give a fuelling requirement of about 7.5% more fuel.

I record the odometer reading every time I fill up, how much it cost, what it was, and how many litres I chucked in. I have a pretty good high-tide mark in my filler neck so I'm pretty sure I'm consistent with my fillups. How I actually record it is I spend 30 seconds typing it into my mobile phone as I go in to pay for my fuel, then save the message so I can retrieve it later. Every couple of weeks I type in the info into Excel and it spits out the graphs for me.

I use the same spreadsheet to record all of the costs with the bike. I have a paper copy of the service stuff, but I like to also have all the info somewhere else.

09 696, SS Termi w/ECU and air filter, Ergal timing belt pulleys, 1800 miles, never get more than 125 miles before the fuel light comes on (2.8-3.1 gal.) about half the time 93 octane, other half 105 blue gas, runs much better on blue (highway). Bike seems to thrive at 95-100mph. Funny thing is my 2002 620 did almost exactly the same, just not nearly as much power (or fun).
