I run high test in mine. I didn't think regular would be good for a high rev twin. But I'll try when this tank is gone. My fuel light doesn't work so I fill up at 100 miles. Yesterday  I put in 3.8 gal. in with 105 on trip odameter. Cost 15.00 dollars even. Sure would like to save som money on gas. I checked my mpgs once and it was 40 so I stick with that figure, my bike is a 900ie fbf (i think) slip ons and an upgraded ecu, (not sure of brand). And I cummute to work (5 miles rt), never really gets warm. And little piddly trips just buzzing around.
I'm not a fast rider so I only hit the throttle every once and again.

You really need to get that bike checked out. If your pumping 3.8 gals per 100 miles your not much over 20mpg.

High octane isn't ment for high rev, its for high compression, so its safe to use regular, and recommended.

Yep - good idea. Might be rich also. Up top in this thread exhaust pipe color is mrtioned. Mine's black so I'm going to run this tank out and stick in some 87 octane to see what happens then get some info from my dealer.
He set it up and it runs great but maybe I shouldn't be such a puss with the go switch. Problem is the way to work is definate slow speed (7 minutes). Don't really get out and just ride which is what it probaably needs.

Can you take the long "scenic" route to work? ;)

Yeah, 105 miles with 3.8 gallons is just over 27mpg...

Yeah I could take the "long senic route" but I need to be at work at 7 and am to lazy to get up any eariler than usual. What I need to do is take the long way home and get things really warm. I'm stuck driving a school bus for another week so my trips are all about 5 miles for now. When my wife's work gets caught up I'll start doing some week end rides and see how things work out. Might check on getting my light fixed too. When I fiirst got my bike I ran out of gas once at 143 miles. That gives me 37mpgs. I think my biggest problem is lack of throttle control, if I were smoother I bet my mileage would improve.

I put myself in the 30-40 mpg group, even though I often experience 40+ during out-of-city riding.

When I get the low fuel light, I still have 40+ miles before I'm dry. Muhaha

I'v run 94 octane to date; yesterday I filled up with 87 octane, I noticed the inner end of the exaust pipes are blacker as opposed to grey.  Wish i had pulled the plugs and photographed them before doing the switch for comparison sake.

Bike seemed to be running hotter; but yesterday was the hotest day of the year so far, its the first time I've seen the engine temp at a high of 227 F in city driving. Normally she runs at 207.

After riding for about 3 hours on Sat around the city running errands and taking scenic long cuts; finding some new asphalt, I did notice at the end of the day it took some time to idle smoothly after stopping for 1/2 hour.

My experience has been that the 900's seem to get the best milage....  course I'm biased...

I routinely get over 150 miles to a tank on my 01 900.  I filled up today at 140 miles and put in 3.5 gals.  That's the first time I've filled up since the FBF slip ons got installed and the 6000 mile service was completed.  Mileage seems pretty close to what it was.

This is usually on 85 octane, yes in Colorado our low grade is 85.  Bike seems to run fine on it, so that's what I stick with!

Black?  Sounds like you're running rich which would explain your crappy mileage.  If there's no major problem you just need a tune up.

Changing octane won't change the fact that the bike is running rich.

Milage on my commute seams to be ~ 36 mpg, but I tend to be a little heavy on the throttle. [moto]
