Title: Ducati Cagiva
Post by: Monster Dave on February 17, 2009, 12:46:58 PM
Has anyone on here seen or own a bike from the Ducati Cagiva era? I've heard that they are pretty rare.

Thanks!  [thumbsup]

Any Ducati from the late 80's through 1997 uses the Cagiva font and has Cagiva markings on it.  My 1997 M900 had little Cagiva elephants at several spots on it and the name "Cagiva" appeared in a few places.  My 1993 888 Superbike shows the Cagiva influence.

Ducatis from the Cagiva era aren't all that rare, even if certain models are.

Does my '99 Cagiva Gran Canyon with a 900 Ducati mill count?

I had a 1986 Cagiva Allazurra. HAd a 650 Panta motor ran great. Handled like a super tanker.

My '94 M900 is now out in the Milwaukee area somewhere, liberally covered with nifty little elephants.

One of the guys in our local club has one of those.  I rode it.  I guess it feels like an older multistrada

Rare?? I wouldn't say that at all.

ANY Ducati bike made between 1984 and 1998 is a "Cagiva Ducati."

Unless you are referring to Cagiva-branded bikes with a Ducati engine, i.e. Elefant 350/650/750, Alazzurra, and the Gran Canyon.

1990 851 ... got the cool elephant on the fuel cap.  other than that, close inspection reveals it
to have been assembled on friday afternoon by a guy who had too much vino for lunch.  the
new bikes are semi-infinitely better.

I've got a 1987 Ducati Paso 750 and an '88 Paso project bike. The Paso is not necessarily "rare", but when was the last time you saw one on the road?   ;)

The SS750, SS900, and early Monsters are not rare....the 851/888 bikes are a little more rare.....the 750F1, especially the SantaMonica, Laguna Seca, and Monjuch versions are a bit more rare......then consider some of the other models made in the mid-80's, like the 1984 MHR, and you get a even more rare.....

or a 1985 Mille S2....

or a 1985 600TL...

My Indiana was personally responsible for making quite a few Ducatista at Indianapolis ill.  It gets some fun reactions - people love it and want to talk about it, or they hate it.  It handles surprisingly well.

I walked up to find a guy asking his friend, "How do you figure they got that Ducati motor in that Yamaha frame?"
Another guy, "oh GAAawwwd!  I'm gonna be sick!  WHY?!  WHY??!!! "   [laugh]

You know...that's the one thing everyone assumes is that it was a very cool sterilization machine.  Not so much.  Most days, and most stop-lights there was no problem.  Heck, you'd even forget how close the engine was to your...um...junk.  But, there were a few days in the summer of '07 where the mercury was over 100'F, no wind, and some LOOOOOOOONG stop lights where I set the bike on it's side-stand and just stood by it awaiting the infernal traffic signal to change.  That was bad...  Honestly.....98% of the time there was no issue with it.  [moto]

MDave -- there are a pair of Gran Canyons just up the road from you at Alan & Felicia Sean's (along with their Monsters) here in Prescott, and at least one Elefant that was for sale for the better part of a year (might still be) down in your area around Phoenix.

There's also an Elefant/Gran Canyon listed on CL in the bay area.

beautiful!

i don't love the bottom cowl, but it might grow on me.  on a naked, those look clunky to me..

on a half faired SS they look much better -- more in tune.

but nice score!

Actually came to the same conclusion on the belly pan, it's now history. The seat cover is now a pukka red one, found on Fleabay dirt cheap. When it turned up it was mint and also made in 1993!

Not a Ducati.

Plus, it's not a good Elefant anyhow.  It has a trellis main frame, which NONE of the Elefants have.  It looks more like a Gran Canyon than an Elefant.

Elefant:

I have a '95 m900 which still has elephants all over. I tell ya, they don't make 'em like they used to.  [roll] All time favorite elephant is on the gas cap.  ;D

Oh, and that '93 m900 from above is waaaaaaay too clean.  [cheeky]

Yeah, was a bit sparkly wasn't it! I spent about 2 months over the winter that year getting it looking like that.

It is currently "resting" in my garage awaiting time and space for a better restoration. As it's such an early bike I intend to get it back to somewhere close to original with only period accessories fitted. The motor needs a little work too so a bit of TLC is needed.

I have a 1000DS Monster as well but the 900 is always my favourite  [thumbsup], early Monsters are cooooool...!
