Title: Light Beer? Why?
Post by: DarkStaR on March 09, 2009, 11:23:51 PM
I don't get it!?!?!  ???

Why?

What's the purpose?

Is it cheaper?

I did the search (http://tinyurl.com/blg85l), and it begs me to ask: "...Then why drink it at all?"

For you light beer drinkers here, you know who you are,...WHY?

Some people don't have an easy time controlling their weight and have to pay attention to shit like calories or sodium or whatever.

You can drink more cans or bottles and then brag about how much you drank ! Most of the guys that I used to play Golf with drank Light beer.

I think they liked to drink and piss and could drink the stuff all evening and not get drunk .

Eventually they got a liking to the taste of the watered down stuff.

When I could drink, I liked the High Test version of Beer.

I liked to be able to chew it !  Boar's Breath, Lowenbrau Dark and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout                 Dolph        :)

Most light beer is around 4.5 to 5%, which is fairly close to average for a beer.  You can definitely get drunk off it.

But your right about people drinking it while golfing.  A big reason for that is that it is easier to drink when it is hot (both outside temperature and beer temperature) and is not as filling as a porter.

I think a lot of people got used to light beer in high school and college because it was cheap and readily available.  And they continued to drink it after that.  The only time I drink the stuff is when it is free or I'm looking to get hammered (read, drink a lot of them and not worred about enjoying it).

I think that is a little generous on the percentage, remember Coors used to be outlawed because it was a 3.2 beer and Black Butte porter isn't much over 5%

With the exception of Sam Adams Light, which really isn't especially light.

Great Taste. Less filling.

If I'm drinking quality, I drink Guiness or Murphy's Stout. Duck Rabbit Stout is good too, and I like a lot of microbrews and imports. Dark, hoppy, yummy.

Now, if I'm "out drinking" I want something less filling. Something that's not going to fill me up and make me want to stop after 3. I also want something a bit cheaper and more universally available to avoid the inevitable "what do you have in a bottle" conversation in a busy bar while 300 other people are trying to order. In those instances, it's so much easier to simply mouth, "Miller Lite" to the nice girl behind the bar and be immediately rewarded with product.

It all depends on the time, the place, and the expectation.

If I want quality, these days I drink Hoegaarden.

Unfortunately, at 39, my waist can't take that stuff day to day.  So I drink Mich Ultra.

I typically drink Guiness from day to day or just about any type of Sam Adams...

light beer, dark beer, low-cal beer, near beer, malt liquor... does it really matter? People like different things for different reasons. I like Icehouse. I like it when it's freakin hot out and it goes down like your sister.

They're called lawnmower beers. Whether it be light or "full flavored". They suit a purpose to the one drinking them.

Oddly enough, I remember looking at a chart and finding that a lot of "light" beers aren't as light as you might think.  Some are only a few calories & carbs behind the regular version.  It's worth doing the research on your light of choice compared to its full-flavored & caloried counterpart.  You might only be saving 10-15 calories a beer & 1 or 2 carbs.

Why Mich Ultra?  If memory serves me correctly, miller light has fewer or slightly more calories than mich ultra. I dont remember the calorie count of mich ultra but if memory serves me correctly (i had a couple beer as im writing this, and the beer is HITE, a Korean beer as im living here at the moment) a bottle of miller light is 95 calories.

I think mich ultra is the reason why the start of this thread, it is too light.  Not to knock you but i think if calories is the issue/reason you drink mich ultra, im saying that there are other beers with similar calorie count but with more beer taste.

Back in my more colorful days I would always bring cheap beer to a party. The reason being that if I brought good beer it would be gone in no time. I've always liked the more premium beers like a good hefewiesen or a dark bock. Then I started drinking Corona. Now that I'm over 30 I drink miller high life. If I had a choice between beer and liquor I would chose a glass of chilled fine tequila on the rocks.

When I was in college, there were 2 things that I absolutely refused to go cheap on. Toilet paper and beer.

But honestly, today, after refining my beer palate, I have to say that even Natty Light has it's place. A great beer for bowling and pizza...

I'm not loyal to a specific brand or type, but my buds like a decent quality beer.  [drink]

If I'm in the "great taste, less filling" mood, I'm not drinking beer anymore. That's whiskey/scotch time.

Guinness only "feels" heavy.  It does OK on a comparison to other beers, calorie-wise:

Guiness Draught:  126 cals/12 oz
Heineken: 150
Corona: 148
Budweiser: 145
MGD: 143

Drinking light beer is like making love in a canoe - it's make the beast with two backsing close to water...

Being from the beer capitol of the states (no not St. Louis, Missouri) I can only order Lite, MGD, High Life, or if I feel like getting my chops busted MGD 64.  I've always been a fan of Miller Lite because you can down it if it's not frosty cold and it is a very drinkable beer (read watered down flavor).  If I'm drinking for deliciousness I'm grabbing a rocks glass and a bottle of Grand Marnier.  If I'm at the bar PBR me ASAP.

It really is just a matter of opinion, taste, and activity.  If I'm out mowing the lawn I'll grab a Lienenkugels Sunset Wheat, sushi dinner I'm having a Tsingtao, or if I'm out with the boys it's Lite or PBR.

Given my choice, I'd drink quality micro brews. Times are tougher, and I can either spend $12 on that 6 pack of Belles, or 14 on a 30pack of Busch Light. Or 12 on 1 bottle of 120 IPA  [drink]

Calories factor in as well. According to calculations, some of my own homebrews have clocked in at over 300 per pint  [beer] . Ya just can't drink 4 or 5 of those a night and make it through the door at the end of the month ;)

back in the day when I partied.. I always carried a bottle of albertsons brand vodka to what ever party I went to. no one ever drank it, but, bringing somehting to the party was a ticket for beer.. so other kids show with sammy smiths out meal stouts in a cooler, or other good beers I would drink those and leave the vodka out.

that container went to like 15 parties, and was never opened.  [laugh]

I used to drink Miller Lite.  Something about it started making me sick while I was in Korea.  Since then, can't even drink anything made by Miller without [puke], that's why I drink Ultra.  The stuff is pretty close to water, but at least it's beer.  Been known to drink some Natty Lite, too.

I remember HITE from when I was there.  The Korean brewed Budweiser I remember as being pretty terrible.

I'm not opposed to cheap beer at all.  I don't drink soda and water is usually too bland to drink with dinner, so light tasting beer goes well with pretty much anything, depending on the meal.  Plus you can find PBR cheap as shit most places and I have emotional issues with spending $6 on a glass of wine (hoists currently drinking 16oz pbr to screen).  I'd also be willing to bet that a lot of people (present company excluded, you folks seem to know what you're talking about  :)) would fail a taste test between Bud Light/Keystone light/Natty light/etc.  A bar in the town I went to college in had a cooler that advertised its temp as being a constant 30 degrees, which is supposed to make the beer "taste better".  It actually just numbs your taste buds.  I could give less of a shit how many calories are in a beer (and I shows, I assure you) but if I'm gonna go on a bender, it sure as shit isn't going to be on a 12 pack of Boddingtons.  After two hours I think I'd feel like a bear with a tranquilizer dart in his ass.

My Dad used to make a batch of " home brew " every now and then.

Had the big crock, the bottles , the thingy the you floated in the brew that told you when it was ready to be bottled, bottle caps, and caper and syphon.

We also used to make Root Beer. Sometimes after it was bottled ( the Root Beer ) it would start blowing up as it was warm at the time, not refrigerated.

The " home brew"  was very yeasty tasting for some reason.      Dolph      :)

And to elaborate on the story, they were driving a pick-up truck and it wasn't a cooler of PBR, it was about 10 cases of PBR in the bed of the truck.

I guess I am of the mindset that if you are counting calories or concerned with your waistline, you shouldn't be drinking beer to begin with.  On the other hand, I know people that have claimed to have drank so much lite beer that it is now what they like, nostalgia or some other b.s. reason...

If you are drinking to get drunk, go for the hard stuff and you will get there much faster.  I doubt saving 40 calories will make you skinnier.

There is no fat in beer. People get fat from eating nacos and hot dogs while sitting in front of the tv all weekend watching sporting event and movies.
