Got the okay from the wife to trade the Monster and get an 848. Then I got a quote from my insurance company and it is through the roof. Geiko for those who want to know. I have a couple tickets on record. I just have liability on the monster because its paid off and its a 97. The liability costs something like 25 bucks a month. Full coverage for the 848 would cost around 500 bucks a month. Talk about getting my bubble popped. Guess I'm gonna have to do some insurance shopping. And yes I believe insurance is a legal scam. Little bit upset right now.
Ouch dude. I pay 40 a month for full coverage for my S2R1000. That's with Foremost (subsidiary of Farmers)...
Yeah I was shocked. No wrecks or DWIs just some tickets.
Insure it in your wife's name with you as a driver.
B and I just saved close to 50% on our premiums doing this with some of our vehicles to get our payments lower.
We have Progressive in NY.

Ill have to try that. I think my wife has more tickets than I do though and she's a bit younger than me. She's 24 I'm 32.

I know that insurance is really dependent on location, bike, person, etc. Nonetheless, in my experienve Geico is much higher than others around. Definitely do some shopping. You might be pleasantly surprised. Keep your fingers crossed.
Oh, and be sure to send pics of your wife to the dirty ole man from New Hampshire. [cheeky]

Sometimes, if you can 'grandfather' into a good company that your parents (or hers) have used for years... There are 'hidden' discounts that can save BIG $$$$$.
Years ago, I had a g/f who had State Farm. Her grandfather had had State Farm since like the 1800's or sumptin' like that. We've split up, but somewheres in thier computer, I'm ***STILL*** on the unbelievable low rate system.
I've tried calling other companies to see if they can save me some $, and NO ONE YET has even come close...ever. (not that I try much, I'm happy with what I'm paying for the coverages I'm getting...) YMMV.

i wouldn't expect comprehensive coverage on a $14k (hyper) sportbike to be as cheap as liability only on a 12 year old standard naked.
i'm sure liability for the 848 would be "cheap," too.

Liability was something like 40 bucks a month. But I am going to have to finance some of the bike, hence the full coverage. Wife pics to follow.

Jon - no doubt the 848 is a fine bike, and I'd like to have one myself. I resist the temptation simply because I've had crotch rockets before and it is really hard to ride them slow. If I got another I would have a suspended license in no time, something that neither you or I can afford.
My advice is to keep the Monster - still lots of fun and easier to ride slower.

Seriously guys and gals, give State Farm a chance if you haven't already. Yes I have multiple cars/bikes/house through them and have for almost 18 years, but motorcycles are so reasonable with them. I have never been over $28 a month for full coverage on a bike and I am just shy of 35 years old. Clean record other than a crash and ticket that are both years old now. My 08 Thruxton (I know, it is no 848) costs me 25 a month with full coverage and medical. My 99 monster I just bought is 18 a month for full coverage and medical.
Why is it that I just realized the bacon animation was bacon? I have thought it was carots until now. I am a noob. [bacon]
Geico for me. Was $400 a year for full coverage, 250 deducts on the 999, S4R, and the KTM. [thumbsup]
Take the MSF?

I like the way State Farm is set up in South Carolina.....they go strictly by displacement and not the category of bike. All bikes 750ccs and under are one basic fee and all of them over 750ccs are another, slightly higher, fee. My Paso, the 748, and the GSX-R750 have the same liability monthly cost around $18/mo +/-$3. The 748 with full coverage is around $30/mo. The Harley, both ST2's, M900ie, and the R1 have liability right at the same cost as the smaller bikes, but full coverage is $35-$40 per month.
I've been looking at the 848 and 1098 (1198), and if going by insurance costs, I may as well get a 1098 (1198) as they are the same as the 848.....Hmmm.....I wonder how much an exotic like a Bimota DB-5R would be. I'm sure they'd have to charge more.

I need something faster than your bike. [evil] I just want something newer. My bikes got some miles on it ya know. It just turned 36,000 yesterday. I'll wait and see what happens. The owner of KCI owes me a favor or two so I may try to cash in on that. Still debating it. Don't necessarily want a bike payment and I sure as hell don't want that insurance premium. Just because it goes fast doesn't mean I have to ride it fast.

The problem with that FOR ME is that I have a really good auto/homeowner insurance company, USAA. Unforunately, they write polies through Progressive who is REDICULOUSLY high. I called State Farm and they will only write a bike policy if you have a major policy with them already such as auto/homeowner...
Besides Greg, I still need that new clutch. Wouldn't mind if there was a new bike wrapped around it. ;D
I live in NJ and got the motorcycle insurance through Rider sp? but for my 07 S2R1K it is 12.92 per month for liability only, full coverage costs me 45 a month. I am 31 so its really cheap. I need to find out how much the 848 would be nice I want a second bike and it looks sooo nice. [moto]
+1 to state farm i am 24 and have my 1098 and car with them. Nobody else came close to matching the price for full coverage on my bike. I'm paying around $90 a month for the bike. Make sure you take defensive driving for the extra discount too. No points or tickets on record though here. Good luck [thumbsup]

Same boat here. Who you using for bike insurance?
+1 again for State Farm. Full coverage on the 999 is $60 a month, with two tickets. The coverage on my S2R 800 was actually more than the SBK.
....and to the bike only with a car- I started with a car, put the bike on the policy, sold the car, and kept the bike no problems. It's definitely not corporate policy...discretion probably goes franchise to franchise.
You could consider buying a nice used SBK. There are plenty of perfect, low-mileage examples out there.
Sell your Monster (if you want to), pay cash for a used SBK, and then you'll be able to carry the minimum required insurance levels. You'll save lots of money in the long run. Call me crazy, but I don't like borrowing money for toys like bikes + boats, etc. YMMV
Oh - and I have to be a dissenter on all this State Farm cheerleading. [laugh] I had HORRIBLE experience with SF as a homeowner (including a trip to arbitration), and we switched to a different insurer. Again, YMMV

As a homeowner i know they are not the best i wouldn't recommend switching your house to them. My mom was with them for 18years and they just dropped her last year because they decided her house was in a high risk area, it has never been moved...........
State farm covers track days by the way ;D
Progressive treated me well with my accident, paid out the wazoo quickly and the premiums can't be matched by the home insurance carrier. Guess I'll have to wait to see the policy renew before I'm sure.
Insurance is most definitely a legal scam... my wife works in insurance so she knows..
My bike is both registered and insured in her name with me listed as a driver... so MUCH cheaper that way. insurance isn't just on your driving record... mine is clean. hers is shit. but she's got better credit than me... so insurance in her name with me listed as a rider came out to be about 1/10th the cost of having it all in my name.
338 a year, so.........about 28 bucks a month for full coverage.
with progressive.
I'm about $100/mo for three bikes (full coverage on the HD and '95 M900, and liability on a 96 SS) and a renters policy. 35y.o. w/o tickets (that they know about yet...)

My Monster costs more than my SP3 "because it has a bigger engine". $340 a year through state farm full coverage on the Monster.
In a couple weeks, I turn 25. Yay for lower rates! I'm switching everything over to State Farm since I know someone out here who's an agent.
Audi: $95/month
Duc: $24/month
Renters: $11/month
All as full coverage as you can get. I don't think its too bad but I don't have much experience. I've got no tickets or wrecks in the past three years.
I had State Farm but I left and went to Ryder.
On my 675 they were the only ones in the ballpark. Everyone else $2k a year full coverage. SF - $450 for the same. When I sold the Triumph and put my KTM 950SMR in it's place it jumped to about $1000 a year for the same coverage.
Rider was $300 even for the same.
I carry full tort on all my insurance policies so that raises rates a little but it's worth it for me to have it. Needed it once and didn't have it. Lesson learned.
Try ducati foremost. I am a 23 year old male and my rate for my 696 for full coverage was $313 a year and for my 1100s it is somewhere in the 600s a year.
D*mn dude!! You're going to get a stiff azz raping if you go that route with current ins.!!
I'm talking to my insurance about 1100S tomorrow.
These f*ckers are jacking me on the 620 ins. in TX!! >:(
I'm about ready to shop around.
Plus, I just got a scam letter from them saying they jacked up ins. after a credit check. Said this was a follow up letter to the letter they SAID they sent out asking us to do the check.
BULLSHIT!! >:( >:( >:( >:(
This credit crap does suck. I am 30 years old with no tickets or accidents. I have taken a MSF course and have been riding for about 8 years. My coverage for the s4r is $560 a year. While I know it is not rediculous I called the same ins. company that a friend of mine went through with his s4r and my quote was significantly higher than his.
He is 31 with 2 speeding tickets on his record. His credit is a good bit better than mine though.
Try raising your Deductibles to $1,000 on Comp. and Collision. Makes a big difference .
I'm carrying full coverage on my 1098R and that's what I did. I think my 1098R for a year cost less than $,1000 this past year.
It may go up this Spring when it is time to renew because of the medical payments from my accident on #1 S4Rs.
I'm 59 as well. Had no tickets. Must have good credit rating ? Have 4 bikes insured. Dolph
