Also known as "We're make the beast with two backsing stuck."
So Mother and I decide to go out and have some fun with the guns. I'm super excited cause it'll be the first time I get to play with my shiny new HMR .17. So we head down the mountain a little ways and on to a back road on the side of another mountain.
The road (if you can call it that) narrows into one lane on the side of the hill and is covered in about a foot of snow. We're in his tricked out Jeep so I think nothing of it. Then he decided to slow down cause it was a getting a little treacherous. Bad idea.
As soon as the Jeep lost forward momentum, we slid into the side of the hill and into a ditch about 2 feet deep on the passenger side. So now I'm stuck in the jeep against a wall of snow and Mother's trying to rock us out of the ditch. I start having visions of the tires catching and us flying over the edge on the other side of the road so I climb out via the driver's side. I want no part in rolling down a hill, even if there's a roll cage involved.
About 30 minutes and one clutch later, we got the Jeep out. Talk about an adventure.

What I find rather silly about this is
sitting at my parents pad in the basement are:
Dana 44 Font axle, Double walled w/ 4.88's, a spool, and locking hubs
Dana 44 Rear axle, Double walled w/4.88's, and an ARB
4 1/2" Rubi Exp long-arm kit
4-1 NP 241
Beadlock wheels
Hydraulic steering assist
and
a Warn 8274
All waiting for shop time to install on my TJ
and i keep stuffing it into ditches while I wait
I have a nice new dent too [thumbsup]
Air Locker?

Air Locker?
ARB = Air Locker
I
need 2 of them
but
Most of the parts and all of the set-up/welding are a gift from my pops so I will get what is given to me and be happy with it
at least until i is rich
Ahhhh
did not see the ARB above.

Huh.. That's odd... I don't see any tracks going to the jeep... Did you slide straight sideways? I'm not familiar with this white thing called snow. :P

Yep, the pic is deceiving, the road has a pretty significant slant to the pass side
as soon as I let off the throttle, in we went.
and at that point I think i had already backed up a fair distance
but
couldn't get any grip to get out
now that's an adventure!!!
glad you made it out ok, you two :)
so... did you go shooting after?

You will hate yourself if you put a spool in the frontend. Get another ARB. Im running detroits in mine.
now where is that other pic of a white jeep stuck in a ditch?
wasn't that in the PNW as well? only that time it was water instead of snow.
i think mom has a strange attraction to ditches.

Nope, didn't get to go shooting. The sun was going down and it was getting cold quickly. We were already really cold cause we had to sit there a while and let the engine cool after overheating it. So we started heading back.
Maybe next week sometime if he's feeling better.
Glad you guys made it out ok! [thumbsup]

^ what he said. Spool front and ARB rear is just silly backasswards. Well, unless turning isn't a priority?

Yeah, Mother has one thats a bit more modified than mine. He let me shoot it and I was hooked. So I was saving up to get one and surprise! I got one for a Christmas-Valentines Day-Birthday present. Yay!
Good news, clutch on the jeep seems ok.
I wish I had taken better pictures. The carnage was worse than it appears in the pics. A is where we started. B is how far forward we went in the ditch before getting out. In the first pic I posted, where I'm standing is about ten feet further then how far back the car went.

My response as we were sliding into the hill? "Um, stop stop stop!!"
His response once we realized we were kinda stuck? "Huh. Thats interesting."

I would be right there with everyone on the spool issue. I thought my pops was nuts when he put that combo in his wheeler...but it works really well. it will most def' change on-highway driving characteristics, but that is what the old school locking hubs are for
[laugh]
"it was getting cold"

shoulda had a landcruiser [roll]
Ha! a land cruiser would still be in the ditch. jeeps trump all
Dude, before I became a Porsche tech I used to build Jeeps. Toss the spool. You WILL regret it and so will your steering. If you don't want to pop for a full on ARB or Detroit for the front then just toss in a Lock Right. They work good in a front axle but suck in a rear. Didn't you say you were running 44s front and rear? If anything put the spool out back and run the ARB up front. It will still bring the suck but won't be as bad as having the spool up front. I won't talk to you anymore and will only say mean things behind your back if you put that spool up front. You would need full hydro steering just to turn the wheel but the jeep will still want to go straight. I had a customer that wanted me to put one in a buggy for him. He broke front axles every time he went out after that. Then I put in a Detroit and all was good. Go with the lock right in the front if your concerned with cost.
a spool in the front can be disengaged via the hubs for 2-wheel on-highway, in the rear it is just locked in all the time causing the front to push...regardless of which end it goes in, it is going to suck. I need pair of ARBs. anyone want to give me 2 grand?
isn't the lock-right the one that pops and snaps like an old hooker's knees when it engages/disengages?

dont roll your eyes at me woman............how would your audi have done?
[cheeky]
it probably wouldn't have gone in the ditch...stupid thinking car hovers in place when you try to spin it out
agreed.... the audi would have never gone in the ditch in the first place [thumbsup]
Any automatic locker will click and pop sometimes. In the front, with hubs it is a non issue because you would be unlocking them anyway.

nor will it get out of your driveway with over 12 inches of snow under it (as my dad would/has complained)

Yeah it'll be just fine when you disengage the hubs for highway but I'm talking about when your out bouncing around in four wheel drive. Even if its muddy as hell out the Jeep won't turn with the spool in front.

My Touareg will! Don't forget guys, you CAN turn the ESP off and allow wheel slippage...
i wouldn't have been in the ditch with the XR.
i also would have gotten out much quicker

Guys I don't want to hear about what car will do better so please stop.
That's not what this thread was about. I just wanted to share a little bit of fun we had not argue about what woulda been better.
We own a jeep and an audi. Its not like we had another car to choose from.
We got outta the make the beast with two backsing ditch didn't we? And we had a good time doing it. That's what I wanted this thread to be about, not a pissing match or an advice thread.

I ask for something simple and you simply can't do it.
you just couldn't be nice enough to just let it go and let me have my little thread without saying that we did shit wrong and we've got the wrong cars.
I'm locking this thread. I'm so tired of you guys.
