Title: Honeymoon destination?
Post by: NvrSummer on March 18, 2009, 01:40:24 PM
So the soon-to-be-wife and I are planning our honeymoon.  It will be the second week of June, this year.

Any not to miss locations you all can suggest?

Must haves...
- beach
- somewhat secluded and relaxed, but within driving distance of bars/clubs/etc.
- some fun adventure activities
- plenty of booze on hand
- ability to sit in a beach chair and do nothing, or have a fun day followed by a night of partying

Can't be Mexico, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or anywhere in the US.  Done most of that already, looking for something new.  Been thinking hard about Belize or Costa Rica, but I think that's the rainy season there, and that would suck.

Probably looking at spending around $3k for as many days as we can possibly get.  But more realistically, 8 days will probably be the longest we can get away.

What say you DMFers?

Congrats  [thumbsup]

I'd suggest the Caribbean, but a few things to be cautious of:

1. Hurricane Season starts June 1, so you do run the risk of a miserable experience, but of course, it is all chance
2. It is hotter than hell in the Caribbean this time of year.

I am thinking that Greece might not fit the budget...........

Last time I priced Airline tickets to Europe, tickets were around 900$ a person and that was to Germany

Congrats. I spent a week in Costa Rica near Arenal 2 Augusts ago. The rain wasn't bad at all. Tended to be real brief and light, and didn't limit anything we wanted to do. I was in the Bahamas last July for 5 days, and that certainly would fit the relax all day/party all night requirement.

Depending on the cost of flights, Tazmania would be awesome, but maybe a bit cool in June. I went there in April of 2002 and LOVED it!

Thanks all!

Greece, probably too much but I'll check it out.

Tazmania?  I'll look into it, but that never would've crossed my mind!

Bahamas would meet the requirements, but it seems so 'standard' for a honeymoon.

Nailing down a spot is gonna be tougher than I thought!!

Good luck. $3K doesn't seem like much money if you don't want to stay in the US, or go to Mexico/Puerto Rico. Everywhere else is quite a ways away and the flight may kill a large chunk of your budget.  :-\

Personally, I would be heading to Samoa/ Cook Islands/ Tonga but it may be out of your budget, wrt flights.

You'll be amazed at how low airfare to Europe is these days.

I say Southern Spain.  Try between Mabella and Malaga.  Mabella being the nicer area.  Beachs, relaxation (depends on where you stay, with a short car ride you can see so many small towns (Mijas, Rhonda..........)

Isla de Margarita, Off the coast of Venezuela.

- It's basically a different country, the politics don't  apply
- Some of the best beaches in the world.
- The Rainy Season is during December, and That's gone
- Some of the best Partying you will ever find
- The people there are relaxed, laid back, and very tourist friendly.
- The exchange rate will make for some extremely cheap times there.
- Exotic
- You can fly to Los Roques from there to spend a couple of days, to go have sex in a deserted island and the best fresh lobster you will ever have.
- Some of the best food and fruits you will ever come across
- It is a duty free island so the booze and imported foods are scary cheap.
- There are a wide variety of beaches, from the ones that have nice waves for surfing to the ones that are as flat as a plate
- It's not "too" touristy, so it will still feel like an adventure

I have a friend there who's father came from spain to spend two weeks there, he ended up staying for 6 years.

And if you need anything, you can just ask me, I have an apartment there and have gone no less than 100 times  [thumbsup]

Congrats on the honeymoon BTW

my recommendation:
2 years ago we honeymooned in St. Thomas. we got the all-inclusive at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove. it was great, free booze and food all day at the hotel with a private beach. not too pricey when it was purchased as a package.

Jamaica . I've been there. It is a beautiful Island , especially on the North side of the Island. Montego Bay, Ocho Rios . Ruanaway Bay. You could do the Sandals all inclusive or book a Hotel and hang out on the beach by day , or swim in the pool with the floating bar at the Holiday Inn at Montego Bay. It's actually about a 1/2 hour by taxi from the Airport up the coast from Montego Bay.

When we were there they had 7 dance bars in the Hotel. You can take a day trip on a 2 car train to the interior of the Island up and through Mountains to the Appelton Distillery where they make liquor for many of the big name liquor brands.

The train leaves in the morning and gets back by supper time.

It is very hot in late June when we were there. There was always a 15-20 mph breeze blowing near the water.

The water was almost clear as tap water. We snorkeled right off the beach from the hotel and it was like being in an Aquarium. The water temperature was warm .

Lots of fresh fruit and Blue Mountain Coffee. Friday nights were Surf and Turf . Fresh Lobster and Steak Buffet.

Friendly people , duty free shops at the Air Port, No snakes . Golf courses . River drifing trips and the Falls at Falls River and a whole lot more.

Lots and lots of Rum and Red Stripe Beer.   Dolph         :) :)

Con-grates! You may want to look into the BVI's. The people on Virgin Gorda and or Tortola are great. Friendly and relaxed. Great calypso. The "Baths of Virgin Gorda" are natural hot spa caverns. They are both relatively small islands with good beaches, cheap rum, and day excursions to ship wrecks near Salt Island and Anagoda. Oh and by the way, there is a rare book library in the south end of Virgin Gorda but I imagine that may be more of interest  during your 25 wedding anniversary.

Greece is awesome.  Look up an island called Mykonos.  You could also check out Santonini and Rhodes.  Fly into Athens & take a boat

Thanks for all the congrats and all the suggestions!  Keep em coming.

Yeah flights to Greece are looking around $900/person, so that's probably out.  Thailand is around $1400/person, also out.

Don't mind spending some more money to make it that much better, but can't go broke.  This will be a once in a lifetime trip, but realistically can't spend that much more than $3k.  The $3k was a gift, so anything above that comes out of our pocket.

Matador, that Island looks awesome!  Not sure I'm totally comfortable traveling to Venezuela right now, but I'll check it out.  Found a few good websites on it so I'll do some reading.  Looks like airfare is around $800/person, so not that much cheaper.  May just have to bite the bullet and pay for the flight if we want to get somewhere cool.

Dolph - The thing that turned me off about Jamaica is I've heard you HAVE to stay at the resorts.  Like you show up, check in, and never leave your hotel.  Obviously you didn't do that with your tour, but I definitely want to be able to travel around wherever we go.  Most things I've read say you don't want to be wandering around the island.

Anyone been to Belize?

I'm really disappointed in the DMF.  No one has said,

Quote"New plan: give her half your stuff now, and spend the $3k in Vegas on blow and hookers.  You'll thank us."

I really expected this out of ZLTFL, or someone similar.  It's a kinder, gentler DMF...sad, really.

(Congrats, btw.)

Trust me, Margarita is not Venezuela. It is like a completely different country, unaffected by the politics.

Besides, it is run by the opposition, not by Chavez, so it is actually clean and somewhat efficient.

Airfare should be around 500 if you buy in may, which is the offseason.

Cruise maybe?  My fiancée and I are getting married this summer and have a 7-night cruise planned.  We've just got a stateroom a couple upgrades from the cheapest.  With so much to do on a modern cruise ships, you don't *need* the fancy suite or anything just to sleep & do other honeymoon things.  We've got airfare from Atlanta to San Juan for $350 each, and the total price of the cruise with EVERYTHING (taxes, fuel supplement, tips etc) for $2500.  That's slightly over your $3000 mark.  However, there are 5-night cruises from ports like Tampa, Mobile, Galveston etc. that are a bit cheaper.  I really enjoy cruising, feel free to PM if need

Anyone been to Belize?

I went as part of a cruise (1st and last cruise  :P). Belize City is a shit hole, but we only drove through it to get to the mountains to the west. We tubes down a river through a bunch of caves...it was awesome!  [thumbsup] I hear Belize is all about the islands though, which I've never been to.

I know you don't want Mexico or the US, but if all you have is 3K, and 8 days max, I'd reconsider. Why spend a shit load of money on airfare (and 2-3 days travelling) to some place cool, only to have to go cheap when you get there, and leave before you want? Personally, I'd save the exotic trip until I could afford it...and then go big!

For $3K you could go to Vegas and have a great time for 5-6 days. Airfare would be cheap and travel time very quick...rooms reasonable. During the day you can sit at one of the great pools (i.e. Hard Rock/Mandalay Bay) and drink. For adventure you could hit Red Rock, Mt. Charleston...or even Hoover Dam (not really adventure, but cool). At night there are great restaurants and you can party your ass off if desired. Just don't gamble and you'll be fine.

You could also try Whistler. In the summer it's nice...no beaches though. You can downhill mtn. bike on the slopes fo adventure...maybe even ski/snowboard if the Blackcomb Glacier is still open. Lots of hiking also...and Whistler Village has very good food.

Mexico also has some great, fairly cheap spots which you can get to relatively fast.

Anywat, my $0.02.  ;)

That wasn't my experience, but this was about 8 or 10 yrs ago. We stayed at a regular motel in Negril, right on the beach. We hired a local guide to take us around for 1 day. As a plus, he knew where to get several outstanding varieties of local "herbs"... for, um, "cooking"... and they were  dirt cheap. Just threw away the extra when we left. We also managed to sneak into Hedonism for a day, which was outstanding  [evil]

I can barely deal with Vegas for 2 days, much less 5-6.  Blah.

I love Whistler, but I live in Colorado, so I don't really have an attraction to spending time in the mountains for the honeymoon.  It's gotta be beach.

Mexico would be last resort if we can't afford anything else.  Actually, we'd probably do Puerto Rico again before Mexico.  I've only been to places in Baja, but I've had enough Mexico for a while.

Jamaican herb huh?  That could sway things.  Just don't want to staying at some tourist trap all-inclusive place and never be able to leave.

My family has been going to Jamaica for years. My dad was there in the peace corps in the 60's. It's gotten progressively rougher. I was last there about two years ago. I would not go wandering about the island-the locals may be nice to you at the resort, but they do not like you. Going off with a guide may be different, but going solo is a great way to get robbed, then hacked to death with a cane knife.

That's what I have heard.  I worked with a lot of Jamaicans back in my high school days, and although they were some of the nicest people you could meet, they definitely came from a rough background.  I don't want to be trapped at a resort and not get to experience any 'local flavor.'

QuoteDolph - The thing that turned me off about Jamaica is I've heard you HAVE to stay at the resorts.  Like you show up, check in, and never leave your hotel.

I worked in Jamaica several years ago and had a company vehicle that I went ALL over the place in. Explored the Portland area and the Blue Mtns, tried to hike to Nannytown, hung out in  local bars and had no problems at all except for occasional aggressive beggars.  I was working at a powerplant outside of Kingston (Rock Fort) and completely avoided the touristy areas and tourist hotels.

Off the beaten path and not a honeymoon but my wife and I went to Panama a few years ago, rented a little Mitsubishi 4 WD and had a great time.

What about Cuba?  Never been there and I think the US state dept still doesn't want us going there but I think you can get there from Jamaica and the Cubans don't stamp your passport.

Don't know how the airfare would be or the weather in June  but Chile and Peru are on my list.

I suggested Cuba as well.

You can fly through Canada, Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Jam, etc.

My bro went there a few years ago while living in Georgetown, CI.

When you go through immigration, they do not stamp your Passport and are happy to have your nice american dollars to spend in their poor country.

Beaches are beautiful, people are very friendly.

Just dont get in trouble.........

Fairbanks Alaska in January.
1) 1 hour or so of daylight.........no annoying sunshine to interfer with other things
2) average temp -40*...............staying warm is huge and we all know that shared body heat is a great way to stay warm  [thumbsup]

[laugh]

If you dive the wife and did some great dives off Cozmel Mexico.

I'd give a thumbs up to Fairbanks, Sno_duc,  but he is getting married in June not Jan. Although Fairbanks is nice in June it still lacks ocean beaches.  So for the beaches in June consider Yakutat.  It has black beaches with giant surf.  When you have had enough sun bathing and surfing you can do some salmon fishing.  This will give you a chance to teach the wife how to gut and clean fish, which is something every good wife should know.  All this wonderful outdoor activity will make you glad to get back to your hotel, which is where all the real fun should be happening on your honeymoon.

Akmnstr, you bring up some good points. Another spot to consider is the Prudhoe Bay hotel in Deadhorse Alaska, in January....no sunlight for the whole month.....-60*......and it's an old mancamp so you won't even want to leave your room. Or maybe we just drop em off on one of the islands in Prince William Sound, come back in a week or so and pick em up.

Saint Maarten  [thumbsup]

+1000!

They have on road motorcycle drag races at 8am near the old airport.  Two lane road with everything from Backhoes barreling down the road to wheelie barred, Hayabusa beating dragsters.  Surreal.

Orient Beach is the Tits!  Pardon the pun....

We did ours in St. Lucia, had a great time. Our suite had Butler service, and I would highly recommend that.

We were at the Sandals, and had a blast. We had a suite up on the bluffs with a great view, and butler service. You want another bottle of _________ booze? Absolutely they bring it to you. Forget your sunblock in the room and you are at the pool? Absolutely they bring it to you. They give you a cell phone to contact them with while you were there. It was neat. I think I may have gotten spoiled.

There is also an open-air resort near the pitons, each suite has only 3-walls, with a great view. That also means you get to sleep in mosquito nets at night. Avoid that one, I would think.

I slept in mosquito nets in Fiji.  Interesting experience, but well worth in considering were were sleeping in little huts barely off the beach ~

We stayed at La Plage in St. Maarten. My Brother in law is going to move there and know the island very well. I will ask them.

Should be able to get cheaper rates and flights since it is Hurricane Season.

Make sure you have some sort of trip insurance

+1 on that, just in case. The islands that are "way out", such as St Lucia are less affected by the weather, but it could still affect your flight getting there.

Update:

Decided to hit Negril, Jamaica!!!  Went over every possible location on the earth, and in the end decided we pretty much just want to sit on the beach.  I'm totally stoked and can't wait to go!

Thanks again for all the advice guys.

You'll have a blast. Hike the falls at Ocho Rios if you need an excursion.

Go to Cuba

Fly through Canada or any Caribbean Island (non-US).

The restrictions must be lifted. I was in the miami international airport may 3rd and saw no less than 4 flights to havana scheduled for that day. My advice? Antigua. Or St Kitts. Or Barbados. Or St Lucia. Or St Thomas. Or Dominica. Or San Juan. Saw all these in a one week span thanks to the fun ship. Really though... Antigua and St Kitts were places I would consider moving to permanently. Also a little island called Roatan about 45 miles off the coast of onduras is pretty sweet.
