I'm really disappointed in the DMF.  No one has said,

Quote"New plan: give her half your stuff now, and spend the $3k in Vegas on blow and hookers.  You'll thank us."

I really expected this out of ZLTFL, or someone similar.  It's a kinder, gentler DMF...sad, really.

(Congrats, btw.)

Thanks for all the congrats and all the suggestions!  Keep em coming.

Matador, that Island looks awesome!  Not sure I'm totally comfortable traveling to Venezuela right now, but I'll check it out.  Found a few good websites on it so I'll do some reading.  Looks like airfare is around $800/person, so not that much cheaper.  May just have to bite the bullet and pay for the flight if we want to get somewhere cool

Trust me, Margarita is not Venezuela. It is like a completely different country, unaffected by the politics.

Besides, it is run by the opposition, not by Chavez, so it is actually clean and somewhat efficient.

Airfare should be around 500 if you buy in may, which is the offseason.

not sure its your kind of thing, but pretty affordable, and st. john USVI is a great spot

That's funny, one of my college professors used to lead sustainability workshops there.  He tried to recruit students to go, but not many could afford it.

He's probably still doing it, as CSU was somehow involved down there.  I can't for the life of me remember the guy's name though.

Cruise maybe?  My fiancée and I are getting married this summer and have a 7-night cruise planned.  We've just got a stateroom a couple upgrades from the cheapest.  With so much to do on a modern cruise ships, you don't *need* the fancy suite or anything just to sleep & do other honeymoon things.  We've got airfare from Atlanta to San Juan for $350 each, and the total price of the cruise with EVERYTHING (taxes, fuel supplement, tips etc) for $2500.  That's slightly over your $3000 mark.  However, there are 5-night cruises from ports like Tampa, Mobile, Galveston etc. that are a bit cheaper.  I really enjoy cruising, feel free to PM if need

No cruise.  Just did one in Sept, and it wasn't really our thing.  Fun, but a little repetative.  Thanks for the suggestion though!

Sinister - She's already taken half my shit, and the hookers and blow is at the bachelor party, not the honeymoon!

Anyone been to Belize?

I went as part of a cruise (1st and last cruise  :P). Belize City is a shit hole, but we only drove through it to get to the mountains to the west. We tubes down a river through a bunch of caves...it was awesome!  [thumbsup] I hear Belize is all about the islands though, which I've never been to.

I know you don't want Mexico or the US, but if all you have is 3K, and 8 days max, I'd reconsider. Why spend a shit load of money on airfare (and 2-3 days travelling) to some place cool, only to have to go cheap when you get there, and leave before you want? Personally, I'd save the exotic trip until I could afford it...and then go big!

For $3K you could go to Vegas and have a great time for 5-6 days. Airfare would be cheap and travel time very quick...rooms reasonable. During the day you can sit at one of the great pools (i.e. Hard Rock/Mandalay Bay) and drink. For adventure you could hit Red Rock, Mt. Charleston...or even Hoover Dam (not really adventure, but cool). At night there are great restaurants and you can party your ass off if desired. Just don't gamble and you'll be fine.

You could also try Whistler. In the summer it's nice...no beaches though. You can downhill mtn. bike on the slopes fo adventure...maybe even ski/snowboard if the Blackcomb Glacier is still open. Lots of hiking also...and Whistler Village has very good food.

Mexico also has some great, fairly cheap spots which you can get to relatively fast.

Anywat, my $0.02.  ;)

Dolph - The thing that turned me off about Jamaica is I've heard you HAVE to stay at the resorts.  Like you show up, check in, and never leave your hotel.  Obviously you didn't do that with your tour, but I definitely want to be able to travel around wherever we go.  Most things I've read say you don't want to be wandering around the island.

Anyone been to Belize?

That wasn't my experience, but this was about 8 or 10 yrs ago. We stayed at a regular motel in Negril, right on the beach. We hired a local guide to take us around for 1 day. As a plus, he knew where to get several outstanding varieties of local "herbs"... for, um, "cooking"... and they were  dirt cheap. Just threw away the extra when we left. We also managed to sneak into Hedonism for a day, which was outstanding  [evil]

ROFLMAO. Great call. That's what I did when I broke off my one and only engagement. Didn't sleep for about 36 hrs, bouncing around Vegas. Of course, I was 25 and my body could handle it  [laugh]

I can barely deal with Vegas for 2 days, much less 5-6.  Blah.

I love Whistler, but I live in Colorado, so I don't really have an attraction to spending time in the mountains for the honeymoon.  It's gotta be beach.

Mexico would be last resort if we can't afford anything else.  Actually, we'd probably do Puerto Rico again before Mexico.  I've only been to places in Baja, but I've had enough Mexico for a while.

Jamaican herb huh?  That could sway things.  Just don't want to staying at some tourist trap all-inclusive place and never be able to leave.

There were lots of European tourists there, esp. Germans, and none of them seemed to be staying at the all-inclusive places. Again, this was 8-10 yrs ago, so things may have changed. Anyone been to Jamaica more recently?

My family has been going to Jamaica for years. My dad was there in the peace corps in the 60's. It's gotten progressively rougher. I was last there about two years ago. I would not go wandering about the island-the locals may be nice to you at the resort, but they do not like you. Going off with a guide may be different, but going solo is a great way to get robbed, then hacked to death with a cane knife.
If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

That's what I have heard.  I worked with a lot of Jamaicans back in my high school days, and although they were some of the nicest people you could meet, they definitely came from a rough background.  I don't want to be trapped at a resort and not get to experience any 'local flavor.'
